Great Experience
We went on 2/1/08 for a wedding. 3 people in our group arrived early and had no trouble getting into our rooms before the 3 pm check in time. The staff at check-in, in the pub and in the restaurant all went out of their way to make everything perfect for the occasion. The room was superb, with a great Old English Inn feel - and the bed was divine!!

Faulty Towers? No,its Pelican Inn
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/11/07
Non hospitable from the get go. We drove a considerable distance, arriving a bit early, so we asked to check in. "No Sir" check in time is 3 PM" said the hostess. "Your room is not ready" was the reply. Well okay, we'll go to the beach and spend an hour or so, no prob. Back at 2:45 PM. Luggage in hand. We're ready to check in now "No Sir,check in time is 3 PM." But its 2:45 we're here to check in for the nite, was our reply. We went back out to the car and gathered up a few things, and back again at 3 PM. This time we were greeted by the grounds keeper who began to argue with my wife about the check in time, rules, etc. At this point our plans for a pleasant stay at Muir Beach was ruined. We demanded a cancellation and were ordered to leave immediately or the Sheriff would be summoned. Strange but true!

Great Ambience, Poor Service
By A, 7/3/07
I love the atmosphere of this place. I love to visit the beach, and have a nice pint afterwards. But the service is absolutely terrible. Last nite, on Monday evening the 2nd of July, we dropped by on the way down from Muir Woods. It was five in the afternnon, and we hoped to get dinner. There was no one to greet us at the door. The sign said "Please wait for the hostess to seat you." There was a small card at the hostess desk saying "I will be back in a few minutes." After a few minutes of looking around for someone to seat us, a woman with blond hair came by, glanced around and said "No Hostess? Oh, wait." She reached into the bar, and pulled out a DIFFERENT SIGN that said "Please wait for the bartender to seat you" (Or words to that effect.) Then the woman who obviously had some sort of managerial power... walked off without a word. We inquired at the bar for a table for four. The bartendner looked befuddled, and walked away. She confered with a waitress for about five minutes, then came back to say. "It will be about a minute or two, we've got a seven top to seat before you. You can wait in the bar." No problems. We took a seat, in the crowded bar, and figured we could wait 'for a few minutes'. After fifteen minutes, we bought some drinks from the bar. After another forty five minutes, and not a word from the bar or waitress, we inquired about the table. "It will be another thirty minutes or so." We decided that was too long, and on our way out, passed through the dining area and covered patio. There were several four top tables empty. There was only the bartender, and the one waitress on duty. Terribly understaffed, and no one communicating this to the patrons waiting patiently in the pub. Very dissapointing

Wedding Perils
By Lauren, 9/1/06
The Pelican Inn did not follow through on it's own contract!! For our kids wedding this summer: They served roast beef instead of prime rib -the crab cakes were not the size of those we'd sampled - and the bruschetta consisted of stale bread with salsa on it. It appeared they were understaffed, although they charge separately for kitchen and wait staff. Dinner was served an hour late because they did not close the bar or restauant to the public until at least 5 pm - yet they advertise and contracted for a private function. In fact, there were strangers in the facility until just before the wedding started. If you are planning to use this facility: know that they do not set up chairs, etc. for activities other than indoors. While they claim to accomodate up to 100 people, at 80+ we were extreemely cramped. If our kids had not been in love with the 'quaintness' of the place, we'd have found something else!!!

Food and Loathing At Pelican Inn
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/29/06
My wife and I were eager to bask in the familiar welcoming ambience of the Pelican Inn. Wrong. We came upon unattended obnoxious 10-yr-old boys lounging in the main dining room. The coaches of this group of over 20 boys should have been taken out back and flogged. They were arrogant and clueless and had audacity to fill the Pelican's outdoor dining room with these uncontrolled boys, three of which I found stuffing the men's toilets with paper towels to make it overflow, after which I unclogged the toilet and cleaned up because I could not locate a staff member. Not one adult kept these kids under control. After we were seated in the main dining room, a group of 3 well-dressed women took one look at yelling group outside and left. One couple at the fire were upset, cancelled their entrees and left. The woman was so upset she forgot her coat; I ran it out to her. The couple to our right saw the obnoxious group outside, immediately got up and moved to the enclosed nook, but they were still upset. The couple to our left near the fire had come to the Pelican for their 35th anniversary. She had to send her meal back, and his wellington was overcooked, ruinin their romantic dining they had driven 3 hours to enjoy. My wife had the sturgeon. It was dry, overcooked, totally lacking in flavor. The yams were bland, waterlogged. The green beans had no flavor. (I'm a chef and my wife and I own a pub/restaurant.) I requested the beef wellington rare; it came medium (not funny). My beets were okay but cold, as were my potatoes being over carmelized and had no taste. We told the anniversary couple to go to Vladimir's Czech Restaurant in Inverness where they were staying, that they would be very happy there. The Inn's staff was not prepared for such a large outdoor party with the indoor room a 1/4 full. The busboy was untrained and the barman was trying to take care of the dining room and pub, one server for everyone. The bedrooms are nice but balconies are bare, unattractive, no flora or privacy. BUT the rooms are supposed to be small; it's an authenic replica of an Elizabethian English Inn, and you would pay twice for such an Inn in England. We have stayed at the Inn 3 times, most recently on our honeymoon 3 mos ago. Our dinners on both nights were nearly spoiled at that time as well from unruly toddlers at one table, and two very rude middle-aged lesbians, who even though we heard them be told that it was our honeymoon had the audacity to taunt us by tonguing each other and laughing at us when we heard their giggling. There was Mexican music coming from the kitchen and pop music in the dining room speakers, not romantic renaissance music. You don't let 20 screaming kids and adults disrupt the dining experience other paying guests are promised. They should have had their screaming party at a pizza parlor. They did bring in $830 for the Inn, but how much business did the Inn lose that night and more importantly how much return business will they lose? The Pelican Inn is marketed by the owners as "a romantic place to stay". The owners obviously do not care and have no vision whatsoever. Those disruptive children will not be reviewing the chef, staff, service, or ambience. We paying public will who come for a quiet, romantic, and pleasurable fare prepared and served with competence and confidence. The owners have no business degrading the Pelican Inn like this. We were let down. We paid our check and we will not be back.
