Food and Loathing At Pelican Inn
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/29/06
My wife and I were eager to bask in the familiar welcoming ambience of the Pelican Inn. Wrong. We came upon unattended obnoxious 10-yr-old boys lounging in the main dining room. The coaches of this group of over 20 boys should have been taken out back and flogged. They were arrogant and clueless and had audacity to fill the Pelican's outdoor dining room with these uncontrolled boys, three of which I found stuffing the men's toilets with paper towels to make it overflow, after which I unclogged the toilet and cleaned up because I could not locate a staff member. Not one adult kept these kids under control. After we were seated in the main dining room, a group of 3 well-dressed women took one look at yelling group outside and left. One couple at the fire were upset, cancelled their entrees and left. The woman was so upset she forgot her coat; I ran it out to her. The couple to our right saw the obnoxious group outside, immediately got up and moved to the enclosed nook, but they were still upset. The couple to our left near the fire had come to the Pelican for their 35th anniversary. She had to send her meal back, and his wellington was overcooked, ruinin their romantic dining they had driven 3 hours to enjoy. My wife had the sturgeon. It was dry, overcooked, totally lacking in flavor. The yams were bland, waterlogged. The green beans had no flavor. (I'm a chef and my wife and I own a pub/restaurant.) I requested the beef wellington rare; it came medium (not funny). My beets were okay but cold, as were my potatoes being over carmelized and had no taste. We told the anniversary couple to go to Vladimir's Czech Restaurant in Inverness where they were staying, that they would be very happy there. The Inn's staff was not prepared for such a large outdoor party with the indoor room a 1/4 full. The busboy was untrained and the barman was trying to take care of the dining room and pub, one server for everyone. The bedrooms are nice but balconies are bare, unattractive, no flora or privacy. BUT the rooms are supposed to be small; it's an authenic replica of an Elizabethian English Inn, and you would pay twice for such an Inn in England. We have stayed at the Inn 3 times, most recently on our honeymoon 3 mos ago. Our dinners on both nights were nearly spoiled at that time as well from unruly toddlers at one table, and two very rude middle-aged lesbians, who even though we heard them be told that it was our honeymoon had the audacity to taunt us by tonguing each other and laughing at us when we heard their giggling. There was Mexican music coming from the kitchen and pop music in the dining room speakers, not romantic renaissance music. You don't let 20 screaming kids and adults disrupt the dining experience other paying guests are promised. They should have had their screaming party at a pizza parlor. They did bring in $830 for the Inn, but how much business did the Inn lose that night and more importantly how much return business will they lose? The Pelican Inn is marketed by the owners as "a romantic place to stay". The owners obviously do not care and have no vision whatsoever. Those disruptive children will not be reviewing the chef, staff, service, or ambience. We paying public will who come for a quiet, romantic, and pleasurable fare prepared and served with competence and confidence. The owners have no business degrading the Pelican Inn like this. We were let down. We paid our check and we will not be back.
