Low Cost for Waikiki; Don't Expect Much
I'm not that picky when it comes to hotel rooms in Hawaii and will usually book the least expensive room in a decent location. This has worked well in the past, but was taken aback when I first saw the standard room at this hotel. It was on the small size, with dirty-looking carpet, and dirty-looking walls. The queen-sized bed took up about 1/3 of the total area aside from the bathroom section. The sheets and bedspread look/feel clean, and the bathroom also looked clean. Carpets are really off-putting, and must be 10 years old or more. Outside hallway carpet is the same, and is loose, with some edges held down with good old duct tape. Elevator feels unclean.
Amenities are sparse. There is a small, dorm-room-sized refrigerator, 19" TV (I had to program the remote), armoire, two matching nightstands (one used for the TV stand), and a hairdryer. Bathroom is small with a tub and toilet just fitting with perhaps a phonebooth-sized space once the door is closed. Bath towels are tiny. No table to put things on so the top of the small fridge has to serve this purpose- or the top of the TV. The bed was quite comfortable though.
Service was OK. Staff was nice enough. Glasses were never changed out; bathrooms were cleaned well (green stains in the toilet notwithstanding); and nothing was taken.
Parking is an additional $10/day so make sure to factor that in. No in-room safe, but this could be because ours was just a standard room. There is a sundeck on the 8th floor, and coffee/tea and donut holes are served daily on the 2nd floor lounge area where there are also two computers for Internet access.
I was only able to get a 11Mbps connection through the wireless- could not get a reliable connection on the sundeck.
Location isn't bad if you don't mind walking a bit. Beach is close by, and the International Market is a 10 minute walk. The road it's on is more like a wide alley, but seems safe enough.
All in all, I would likely not stay in this hotel again unless it was significantly less expensive than other options. Once over the initial disappointment, it is passable, but nothing to write home about! If you spend much time in your room, I would avoid this hotel.
