Disappointed

Check-in room, no hot water & tub drain clogged. Complaint to front desk, wait for maintenence personnel to arrive, confirmation of complaint. Room change offer brought inconvenience of having to get dressed and pack everything to move, but we were optomistic for better accommodations.
We are good guests, are quiet, respectful, request no housekeeping as our ample supplies were sufficient for our four night stay. Our well behaved and friendly dog is small, clean and quiet and I make a point of cleaning up after him when I take him on the grounds. We are out of the hotel all day spending time at daughter's house so come back hotel just to sleep. We leave room clean and tip for housekeeping. Restaurant good, bed comfortable. However, I couldn't retrieve phone messages even though prompts were followed. Instructions offered by front desk clerk didn't work, either. Clerk said she'd get back to me, however, that didn't happen so I never did get those phone messages.
The kicker...on our fourth and final night, fumes from paint solvents in use for renovations on upper floor seeped into room. Windows don't open for fresh air. Odor getting stronger, coughing, notified front desk. Told someone would come check room. Waited. Concerned for our 5# poodle (how much of those fumes can tiny lungs tolerate) my husband got dressed and took dog down hall where he waited in air that was safer to breathe. Tired of waiting, husband went down to front desk with pet and accepted offer for room change. During my second call to front desk, husband returned at same time maintenance man appeared. He gave confirmation that fumes in room were very strong. Did they think we were lying? Now, 11 PM, we packed & moved everything to other room deciding not check-out and search for another hotel. We had met ther guests in the hall, worried for their health and the health of their children, checked out to find other lodging.
Tired, inconvenienced and needing to get an early start in the morning, we finally got to bed after midnight. Morning of check-out, calmly reiterated unhappy experience to front desk clerk with request to pass complain on to manager. No offer of compensation or discount for our discomfort or inconcenience. We frequently travel to VA Bch to visit family and we are glad hotel accepts pets, but this last stay was awful. Something should be done to keep hotel guests safe during the renovation process. Breathing those fumes is not healthful. Husband and I had throat irriation for two days and I had a headache all that night and for half of the next day while traveling.
Even though both rooms had (on the surface) been renovated, for the most part work was shoddy and rooms had plumbing issues most likely due to failure to protect stuff from going down drains during renovation process. Inconvenient to have to run water 10-15 min. till warm enough to shower and it's a shameful waste of natural and financial resources.
Room service trays remained in hall for long periods of time. Hotel personnel were polite but seemed overwhelmed likely due to understaffing.
