This hotel was terrible -lobby shabby, upon arrival -elevators did not work (which meant a four floor walk up), room dirty and sheets had obviously not been changed - brown, smelly stain on bottom sheet (insisted on a room change for the evening before we checked out the next morning -earlier than planned), used soap in bathroom, grounds unkept with unpicked up trash strewn about, pool had evidence of good deal of algae, empty light fixture in bathroom, asked for additional towels that were never delivered, door to balcony defective, poor drainage in bathroom sink, TV reception poor-to name a few of our complaints. Additionally food was merely adequate and dining facility unwelcoming with disinterested serving staff. I would never ever recommend this facility!
We have just returned from an 11 day stay at the Sunset, whilst working on bringing a water supply to a very rural health clinic in the Sianda District. It was bliss to return to a clean hotel & a hot bath every evening after long dirty days at work. The staff are superb. Talk to them, get to know them. The food was splendid, although the menu is speculitive!Order in advance- service is slow. The view is unique, the setting excellent, you can't be disappointed. we will be going again. Kenya is a fantastic country, its people deserving of all the help we rich, spoiled westerners can spare, after all, we exploited the country first! C.S.
I've stayed 3 times in Sunset Hotel Kisumu and i have always liked it. The hotel is so special because the people who work there are very understanding and willing to help. I also had ones a muskito-attack in the room but what do you want just next to such a huge lake ;-). I will go back to taste the real kenyan friendliness, and i advise you to do the same!
Very dissapointed with my stay at The Sunset Hotel. As they are situated my the lake, my room was full of lake flies. The service and food was also pathetic. Next time i will definately stay at a hotel situated in the City.
Now you've got a place to stay; Friendly staff, a youthful management, cool ambiance, dancing monkeys, Out door swimming pool; Good food and an elaborate menu! What a place to visit with a new and breathtaking view of the sunset at the roof top bar and restaurant recently opened!
Moved here after another hotel was awful. Tjis was amazing. yes the views, the monkeys and the setting are a real attraction, but the staff made it all the better.
Originally moved there for two nights (after our original hotel was not good - putting it mildly.)
This hotel only a few Ksh more and 20 times better. Staff then really went out of their way so we could stay the rets of time in Kisumu.
Can't rate it highly enough.
yes it could do with a lick of paint and yes be careful with the lft - but this Kenya.
Resteraunt evening meals not brilliant but the breakfats were great and the omelettes wonderful. (Anyway just check out the Italian resteraunt in town for a good meal at great prices)
I would go back here time and again.
The nets were excellent and the air conditioning real, worked well and kept rooms cool.
And yest the views really are as agood as the pictures.
Yes, as another reviewer said, this hotel is a bit worn around the edges, as it is 30 years old and does not appear to have had a lot of care in the interim. We stayed here on two different occasions. Watch out for the elevators, as one of them doesn't come down level with the floor, and you'll trip for sure! And you have to hold the button down until you get to your floor. Be sure to check the room before you take it. Look at the little things, such as all 4 screws in the door latch, make sure the sliding glass door can't be forced open even if latched, and so on. As long as the AC worked, we really didn't care! A sit down toilet was a welcome relief after being out in rural areas, but the tub had a ring around it. It just depends how tired you are as to whether you're going to do anything about it! Be aware that entry is possible (although dangerous) by someone coming around the wall (or at least look around) from the adjoining room, even if it is three stories up! The food is fine, unless you don't like cumin in it; after one or two meals we went somewhere else. Got some of the best sunset pictures yet overlooking Lake Victoria...amazing! I recommend a tuk-tuk for getting downtown...only 100 Ksh. Cheers!
i didn't like the fact that whenever it rains the top floor floors and lift can't stop at floor you want and you hold down the button floor i loved the view of the lake especailly if you stay at the top floor
