Very Disappointing Visit
By Joy Hinnant, 7/8/10
We have stayed at the Tar Heel for many years. This is the FIRST year that it has been DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY! First off when we got there and entered the room there was lint, hard and crusted food all over and inside the microwave where obviously it had not been dusted or cleaned, the fridge was musty and smelly, the ice machine was DEPLEATED! The lavatory faucet and vanity was dirty and rusted, the shower lavatory was rusted and broken thus taking forever the get hot water, the mini-blind at the window was broken and lop-sided and we had to take the resturant guide book and some paper towels and wedge them in the bottom of the window to keep people from seeing inside our room. Each night we stayed, the people in the next room had 2 arguments (2 couples 2 nights in a row... same room, so obviously they knew each other) that lead to drunken domestic disputes (that kept us up into wee hrs of the morning) and the office personnel did NOTHING!!! All these things are NOT was anyone needs on a vacation. Things like this are ANYTHING BUT relaxing. We reported our disgruntlememt as we exited but it was taken (we feel like) VERY lightly. Also, we noticed that a number of the people in neighboring rooms knew each other and that amongst a bunch of strangers seems highly unlikely... so we wonder if the barage of people were family or friends of the office personnel... none the less, We'll be looking for a very different place to stay later this year and next year.

Good Price but at what cost?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/30/09
The motel is old and the rooms are to be expected for the rate but the service is absolutly horrible. I am not sure who the owner has paid for these reviews but if you have a family this is NOT the place for you. The owner is a grumpy old man who hates anyone who is under the age of 50. He verbally assualted me over the phone after a mix up with trying to get the room put in my credit card instead of a family members. He was saying things like he does not care about my business because he makes thousands every summer anyway and when we arrived he said he would be keeping an eye on my family and what we were up too I am guess because I am under the age of 50. He also peeked inside of our windows throughout our stay. The hotel room wasn't the best but then again the rates are low. But as long as you don't care about poor service and a crazy man you'll be okay.

Worried after reading previous reviews
By Shannon, 9/14/08
We only stayed at the Tar Heel motel for one night, until we could check into our house. I was worried after booking and seeing the reviews but when we got there, nothing to worry about. It's your typical beach motel room. The room was clean and we saw no bugs. The older gentleman at the desk ( I think the owner) was as nice as could be) Just from chatting we let him know we were going to be staying in Avon. He told us to let him know how things were down there, since Hurricane Hannah was going to hit. If we had to turn around and come back, let him know, he'd save the room for us. I'll probably stay here again.

Reservations
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/14/08
I reserved a room in this hotel about a month ago and the owner told me I had a room and even gave me the room number I would be staying at. I asked if I needed a confimation number and he said no "your good as gold". I called the day before I was to arrive in Nags Head and they said I cancelled the reservation 3 days ago. I don't know who could have done that unless they over booked or made a huge mistake. All they said was " I'm sorry". So by the time I found out, there were no rooms in the Outer Banks, I had 4 people that took off work for a fun weekend at the beach, and we couldn't go. I would never attempt to stay at the Tar Heel Motel ever again.

Very affordable and clean
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/16/08
Our room had two double beds with new mattress. Bedspread was old and could be replaced. The room is outdated however was fine for a weekend stay. We didn't use the pool. Ocean right across the street. Convenient location. Staff very friendly. The room smelled a little musty, however after running the air conditioning the odor improved. The air conditioning (window unit type) was very cold. At bedtime the noise was minimal. Seemed to be mainly families staying there. They have charcoal grills for anyone to use which I thought was nice. There was no telephone or clock in the room. It's not a bad place to stay for the affordable price.

Since I was a kid
By Jennifer, 7/10/07
Ever since I can remember going to the beach, I remember the Tar Heel Motel. Very comfortable, quiet and close to everything. The little feet on the bottom of the pool were one of my favorites as a child. I haven't been there in awhile, but I would most definately go again.
