Run-down, dirty, and overpriced
By BioLiz, 9/1/08
We were a bit late in booking a motel near Yosemite, and ended up in this place. Based on reviews here and elsewhere, I had already low expectations, and most of these came true. The place has dorm rooms and motel rooms. We were with four persons, and stayed in one of the motel rooms with 2 queen beds. I will start with the positive points: it is pretty close to Yosemite's West entrance, and easy to find right on highway 140, east of Midpines. Our motel room was facing the highway, but we did not experience a lot of traffic noise. And although it is run-down, our room had a decent size, we had hot water in the shower, a working toilet, a decent shower curtain, enough storage space, and clean sheets on the beds. I won't count the the spider under my pillow - it is unlikely that you will see it again, since it is dead. Now for the negatives. First, you are greeted with big signs that you will get no refund once you accept the room. A very friendly welcome, I have to say. But (like one other reviewer already said) what are you going to do if this was the only motel room you found near Yosemite? The rates were much higher than posted ($130 instead of the $99 posted online), but again, there are no other options nearby. There were multiple dead bugs on the window shelves that were never removed in the 3 nights we stayed here. It had big moldy spots in the walls (about a foot wide, near the floor, looked like water damage), and a thick layer of dust on the shower's top shelf (the disadvantage of being tall). The "air conditioner" made a lot of noise, but only replaced the hot air in the room with hot air from outside. All the vending machines were empty, and there is nothing else nearby. There was no stopper in the sink - a nightmare if you wear contact lenses, as I do. The sink was ancient - gold speckled laminate from the 50ies - and full of cigarette burns. The towels were very small, and we only got three, despite the fact that we were with four persons. Upon request, we got a 4th one the first night, but not the second or third night. Beds are not made at all. The people from the dorm room nearby were making a lot of noise, screaming and shouting, running over the wooden decks under our window, and doing laundry all night. We were sleeping next to the laundry room, and I blessed the moment when the last load was done - at 4 am. People were smoking just outside our window, but luckily they moved farther away upon request. The office closes at 10 pm (more big warning signs), so don't plan to arrive too late! In conclusion, I cannot recommend this place, unless you are really desperate. I don't mind a budget place, but prices here are not budget at all, and dead bugs and water-damaged walls should simply not be there.

not the place to stay on your honeymoon!
By Jessica, 7/12/05
we had a mix-up with our reservation at another lodge...so we ended up having to stay at muir lodge...we were warned about the lodge, but with no other choice we had to stay. the staff was friendly and helpful--the only nice thing about the place. the room was outdated and dirty. my husband and i were afraid to sleep under the sheets--so we slept fully clothed above the sheets. luckily, we only had to stay one night. i think the lodge has potential if they renovate and CLEAN the place. may i suggest staying at a hotel closer to the park or inside the park.
