Birding here is wonderful
By FrankE, 07/08/09
Spent the 3rd through the 6th of July there. I found the food to be excellent and farely priced. However, the wate staff left something to be desired. When they were waiting on you, they were great. It often took time for them to notice that you needed something. Found the food at 2 of 3 local resteraunts to be fair to good but again, wate staff was unattentive. Limpia Hotel resteraunt was over-priced but food and service were outstanding. People in Ft Davis are are not friendly. For a county of 2500 people who depend on tourist trafic, you would expect them to at least say hello. Noone spoke to anyone as far as I could see...not even to other locals. Birding in the park was outstanding. The park volunteer couple (who never spoke to us in 4 days) has a bird feeding station where we say about 20 birds you don't see elsewhere. All park roads are paved which allowed my low little sports car to go anywhere. We plan to go back next year. The lodge was wonderful.

Stay Away!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/17/06
I saddens me that all the place on earth I love are being discovered." In particular, it distresses me that Fort Davis and Marfa are now being highlighted in such rags as the New York Times (to which I devoutly subscribe). Why can't some of us just enjoy not having to deal with those who really can't enjoy the unadulterated beauty of a natural setting into which dedicated young men of the CCC in the early 1930's built one of the finest retreats on earth? Thank the Holy Lord the Indian Lodge is NOT like any of the many accommodations I have stayed in over the past 55 years around the globe - including some strange places in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South American. It is not absolutely rustic; neither is it a sad imitation of USA comfort. If you can live - even for a few days - without a concierge or room service or wet bar in the room or even "in-room" coffee but if you love sweet-smelling air and the haunting beauty of gentle mountains and can handle something less than the ultimate in comfort, then enjoy! But otherwise, stay away - and let the rest of us enjoy the precious days we have there for as long as we have such.

Great place for a honeymoon!
By Donna, 02/18/06
This place was so wonderful. The view, the clean rooms, the food, the quiet surroundings, the friendly staff, the reasonable rates... We brought our three kids and we all loved it. Would recommend to anyone and can't wait to go back!

One of our favorite trips!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/22/05
My husband and I visited Indian Lodge a couple of years ago and loved it! The accomodations were wonderful, the service was excellent and the food at the restaurant was scrumptious! We've talked about it ever since and want very much to bring our whole family for a visit soon.

Portal of contact between Heaven and Earth!!!
By Ragfish, 03/10/04
As one drives through the Rose Hill pass rising out of the Permean Basin, the air cools and there is a change in perception as the Davis Mountains envelopes you. Passing through the Eastern edge of Fort Davis, a short trip to the entrance of the State Park and then 2 miles until the Indian Lodge!
There are historical rooms, maintained and restored in the original building as well as a new section, with are larger and less expensive.

The place is charming, restful and set in the midst of the State Park. You can lay back and live there, with the Black Bear Restaurant at your door, or use the Lodge as a base of operations for excursions. In the mid-summer, the cooler temperature, low humidity and clear air make this an oasis!

Staff are friendly and accomodating, but the ambience is basically one of "indoor camping"..ie no conceirge, room service, etc. No spa or masseause on premesis, just a beautiful place that you can make of your time there as you please!

If you have a kvetchy princess style spouse or loud obnoxious, whiney kids, please do not come here. I like to go at least once a year and value the silence from human pollution.

There are other accomodations in Fort Davis, but none with this at your door setting. It is like having a spacious tent with indoor plumbing, TV and A/C. Weekdays in spring and fall are particularly peaceful. Summer and particularly July 4th and weekends require reservations 364 days in advance.
