Great for Emergency Use

We were worried about getting stranded at our campground at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon due to icy conditions, so we got out of the canyon and found this old motel in town. My college buddy and I had no problem with the place, but I know there's no way my wife would have stayed there. Call it "adventure accommodations." I was worried about the wallpper, which had an ornate (and ancient, but not in a retro cool way) design on it, which could have easily concealed a little hole through which a Norman Bates wanna-be could spy on guests. The place had the yellow smell of old plaster and bleach, but the gas heat was quick and the water in the shower was scalding. Not much room in the shower for a cross-dressing maniac to do any bludgeoning, fortunately. One of those showers circa 1950 where apparently people were only 4 feet tall on average, the showerhead being way too low. I was a bit surprised at the price ($45), but we were kind of stuck. AAA discount, I found out later. Some of the clientele seemed a little scary, but we survived. Kind of neat to stay in a truly old-style motor hotel. But the one review here--5 stars--now, come on. I give it 2 stars only because it was adequate considering I would have been sleeping in a tent in 25-degree weather. If the mattresses hadn't been like bed-sized cinder blocks, though, I would have given it 3 stars. It's a small town. It was sleeting out. There was nowhere else to go except one other place that looked too run-down. It's all relative.
