Comfortable, tidy and a good value.
By D, 7/23/11
We just spend the weekend at Al and Sally's and found it clean, quiet, and a good place to stay for the money. The reviewer who wrote the extremely negative review clearly has some personal axe to grind. The hotel they described bears no resemblance to the motel we just left this morning. Al and Sally's is run by a cheerful young couple with kids who recently bought it. On a Friday afternoon we got the last available room so it is clearly popular. The bathroom was clean and modern with new tile and fixtures and a very nice new shower stall. There was a large new fridge and a new window air conditioner. The motel is located ten minutes from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore beaches, and we constantly went back and forth from there throughout the weekend. The walls are cinderblock both interior and exterior, making the place surprisingly quiet, though no doubt we were fortunate to have quiet neighbors too. There's a nice little pool in back which was constantly occupied by kids and their parents. There are active railroad tracks that run maybe 200 feet away, but there's no stop there so the train never blows its horn. I'm a light sleeper and had little problem with the occasional train. My only criticism is that the bed could have been better--it was a little uneven. But I slept very well there. You can park your car directly in front of your unit which is really nice. We're planning to go back again before the end of summer

Al and Sally's
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/21/11
Ok not sure what happened between 2010 and 2011 but this place is disgusting. The place smelt like and old ash tray, everything was very work and gross. The peole next door were doing meth at 2am and acting very creepy. I dont scare easily and i took my wife and dog at 2am and drove 2 hours home....thats how insanley unsafe this place is. Something has happened here, owners have changed or something. The place is run by two people in their 20's from russia.....not "Al and Sally" for your saftey stay away.

Long Time Guest and Still Love It!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/10
My family and I have been staying here every couple of years, for over 20 years. Sure, it may be a bit quaint or outdated, but its character beats any branded hotel chain. The age is part of the charm and its owner-run style helps it feel like home. When Al and Sally owned and ran it, it is was great, and it is still great with Mary and her wonderful family living and working there. They are the best. We enjoy the unique grounds, lawn, nice pool and tennis courts, and the convenient location to the Michigan Dunes Lakeshore. The excitement of the nearyby train, the old horeshoe pit, the aging picnic tables and swingset are all elements we've come to know and love. I hope this place, with its real and honest character (something hard to find in these times of formulaic, manila hotel chains), continues on well into the future.

More than Happy!!
By L G, 2/8/10
Returning home for the first time in 3 and a half years, my partner and I flew in from Australia and we did not want impose on family, so we chose to stay in a Hotel. After 5 nights at a dirty, unclean hotel up the road, we decided to try Al & Sally's. It was like stepping back in time, to an era when family came first and not just taking your money. All of the staff we met were absolutely wonderful, and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. We had several family gatherings at the pool and used the lovely lawn/recreation area often. The owners commented that it was so nice to see us using the facilities and enjoying ourself. It felt as if the entire Hotel was for our own use. We can't wait to get back to Michigan City and look forward to spending another month at Al & Sally's. It was nice to spend our funds on family and entertainment and not on an overpriced Hotel.

nice but old-fashioned
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/26/10
A reservation was made for us at Al & Sally's motel. We arrived in a very spacious room that was very clean, but had obviously old furnishings. The bathroom was also obviously old but it was clean. Since our reservation was made by someone else, I had limited interaction with the proprietor, who was friendly. You won't find wirelss internet here, but it had cable, and a refrigerator. For a place to stop a few nights, it was great. There is a train track very close behind the motel, but there are no crossings nearby and it is an electric track. The noise was noticeable, but not enough to wake you if you were sleeping.

our favorite getaway!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/09
Al & Sally's is awesome, very friendly owners, great BIG rooms, great location, great grounds, every year we go there and rent out 4 or so rooms, we cookout on their grill on back lawn, have a fire(in pit we bring)shoot off fireworks in their parking lot(they don't mind, not on 4th!)basically have whole swimming pool to ourselves(very clean, water slide also) tennis, horsheshoes, and close to all beaches, outlet mall, etc. excellent place to just drop in or spend a few days with your family!!we put all of our chairs out in front of rooms, line them up and leave them there all day, very accomodating, great ma and pa, place, great owners!! clean rooms. will go there every time we are in that area, and only there!!

Loved this place!!
By Jennifer, 7/21/09
My kids and I were road tripping up 12 figuring we'd stop at a motel and get a room. We stopped at many motels and left quite quickly. We got to Al and Sallys and felt immediatley safe, comfy and at home. The rooms are HUGe, quiet and clean. It was so comfortable we overslept our first night ans was woken up by the knock on our door from a very nice woman. We cleared out quickly and started back home. Apparently we weren't ready for the AL and Sally experience to end so we drove back, got the exact same room and spent another fabulous day. We will definiatly be back, hopefully in a few weeks. We totally loved the place!!

mom & pop motel superb
By david, 6/25/09
absolutely disliked nothing about this place I would rather give my dollars to an individual mom & pop business than some corporation. Very clean rooms the owners keep this place in really good shape. It reminds me of the days when my parents took my brothers & me on vacation and we would stay in motels such as one like this. Great location and within a mile or so from the beach . I would definitely stay here again and again .

You couldn't pay us to go back!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/25/08
We don't travel much. I am a single mom w/ 2 kids. A friend told us Al and Sally's was close to a family party we were attending and it was cheap. The price was more than advertised. The Motel had a "Psycho" feel to it. Upon check-in we were greeted (after waiting about 10 minutes) by a "less than friendly" owner. We entered our room and stepped back in time. I can deal w/ outdated decor. I can't deal w/ extreme filth. The carpets were almost sticky. My boyfriend's feet turned black after walking around barefoot for a short time. My kids and I kept our shoes on until we got in bed, which by the way had sand in it and blankets you could exfoliate with. The bathroom was just as nasty, the floors were stained, there was mold and or mildew in the tub. Lights were burned out. We wanted to leave that night but there were no other rooms to be found until the next day. The owner gave us a hard time and wanted to charge us for all 3 nights because we did not give 3 days notice. After a little convincing , we paid for only one awful night. Not once did she apologize for the filth or offer us another room. One night at Al and Sally's was more than enough for us. Early the next morning we RAN to a nice, clean, comfortable HOTEL!!
