Okay at the Atrium

We recently stayed a week at the Atrium Resort (Jun 1 - 8). First and foremost, if you are accustomed to staying in 5-star hotels this is NOT the place for you. However, if thoughts of staying overnight in a La Quinta Inn do not turn your stomach, then you will find the Atrium more than adequate. The rooms are a bit older but for my husband and myself it was okay. The bed was comfortable, we had working tv's and cable in both the bedroom and sitting room (with DVD players), the bathroom was large, somewhat out-dated, but definitely usable; the pool was convenient (but not a pool for those who like to sun bathe - it's indoors), and the staff was friendly and helpful. The location was really close to the beach (1 block) so we spent our days playing in the surf and sand. There was plenty of parking when we stayed there but I can imagine that during peak times parking might be a problem. There were several food delivery restaurants in the area so when it rained, we ordered in (Jetman's) and the pasta was great. There are also fast-food joints right beside the resort (McDonalds, Zero'sSubs).
As for Virginia Beach itself...not a fan. In the future I will skip Virginia Beach altogether and head a bit further south to Myrtle Beach (much nicer, cleaner, and economical). Virginia Beach, of course, is out to make a buck off of travelers and, as a vacationer, I expect that. However, I really like to receive quality service, food, etc., for my money (especially when I'm paying more). The food at all of the restaurants that we tried on the oceanfront were mediocre at best and all extremely pricey for what you received. My recommendation is to get off of the strip and head inland a few miles to Laskin Road where you will find a better selection of restaurants and shopping at a better price. Also, take your own umbrella and chairs if you want to lay out at the beach. When we were in Hawaii the beach charged $25.00 for the entire day for 2 chairs and an umbrella. Virginia Beach starts at $36.00 for the same thing and while convenient can put a dent in your wallet after a few days (especially if you are traveling with family). The boardwalk was nice but the shops are rundown and just not what I expect from a "vacation spot."
Overall, the vacation was okay. The Atrium Resort was good...don't panic over the bad reviews, just remember to keep it in perspective (e.g., Marriott-worshipers will not be happy here but Holiday Inn patrons should fare okay). If you have a choice between VA Beach and Myrtle Beach, head further south!! You'll have a much nicer vacation at Myrtle Beach. If you're already coming to VA Beach just remember that a vacation is what you make of it. It wasn't my taste but it wasn't the worst place I've ever been either. Hope this provides some perspective/help to fellow travelers.
