RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!

I would strongly suggest you not stay here. It is apparently the practice of the management not to display their reservation cancellation policy, nor inform you of this policy when you call to make reservations, and then charge you for a full night's stay if you cancel.
My husband and I wanted to go to the mountains for a romantic weekend to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We had stayed in West Jefferson the summer before in a cabin and wanted to visit the area again. He checked the internet and found the Park Vista - an almost too-good-to-be-true motel with good prices. He made reservations for Friday and Saturday nights, and we headed there for our romantic get-away.
When we arrived, we were very surprised at what we found. The motel was located farther away from the restaurants and other activities we'd hoped to experience, and was in such a remote area that I'm not sure I would have felt safe if we'd stayed there. The room we were shown appeared to be clean, but the place had no ammenities at all. Since we'd arrived almost 3 hours ahead of check-in time, we told the woman who showed us the room that we would like to try to find something closer to Boone and would let her know before check-in time if we would still need this room. She did advise us at that time that the owner may charge us a small fee if we cancelled because they could have rented the room to someone else, but never said it would be a full night's stay. Since the parking lot was completely empty, I felt like this might be an attempt to get us to stay there instead of looking elsewhere. I asked how much of a charge, but she said she'd have to talk to the owner, who wasn't there.
We went to Boone and immediately found a much nicer hotel for just a few dollars more that was close to everything we wanted to visit that weekend. Within 30 minutes of leaving the Park Vista, I called and spoke with this same woman and told her we would not be needing the room, gave her my cell phone number and asked her to please call me once she'd spoken with the owner to let us know how much of a charge there would be (I was thinking maybe $25???). I never received a call from anyone regarding the possible charge.
Imagine my surprise when I received my credit card bill and saw a $65 charge for a full night's stay at the Park Vista - a place we never stayed a single night. (The reservation had been made with our credit card). I immediately checked the internet website to see if my husband had missed something regarding a cancellation deadline and found nothing. He also said that no deadline was given to him when he called to make the reservation. No deadline was mentioned when we told the woman at the motel that we wanted to look elsewhere - just that "there may be some kind of fee because we could've rented this room to somebody else".
I spoke with the motel owner this morning and explained step by step what had happened that weekend. This is when I was informed that they have a 48 hour in advance cancellation policy, and that she thought it was nice that we were only charged for ONE night because she could have rented the room to someone else. I explained to her that had we been told we were going to be charged for a whole night, we probably would have stayed there (even though it was not what we expected it to be from the other reviews on the website - no pictures posted, I might add).
What a learning experience. I completely understand a business owner's need to make a living - my husband and I work too. I just wish we'd had full disclosure of the policies regarding cancellation of reservations in advance.
On the positive side, we had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Country Inn and Suites in Boone.
