The clerk never asked us if we wanted a smoke free room. We don't use hotels very often and didn't realize we had an option until the next day when we were checking out. It was then we saw the no smoking sign on the outside of some doors. This room we were given reaked of smoke. We stop at a local supermarket and bought a scented candle which we had to have lit the when in the room and we had the fan in the bathroom going. It still didn't help much. The smell was in the curtains, carpets and bedding. The clerk should make a point of asking if you want a smoke free room and we will know better next time to specify.
