Cleftstone Manor, Bar Harbor

This is a very nice B&B for less than many in the area. Particularly outstanding are the gourmet breakfasts. Staff is helpful and available. It's a nice place with large rooms. Only real complaint was that the only table in our room was tiny and had a TV on it, so there really wasn't a table for visitor use.

We spent 4 nights at this B&B. The owner Anne and her staff were very accomodating and attentive to our needs. We stayed in the Joseph Blair room it is very roomy and has a patio. Would highly recommend that you take the romantic package as it is well worth the additonal fee. The package inlcuded a dinner at the Bar Harbor Inn an upscale hotel and restaurant in Bar Harbor, a sightseeing cruise and a back pack lunch for the trip to the park. Annes breakfasts are great with three choices daily. She also hosts a cocktail party each afternoon BYO.

My husband and I spent a week at Cleftstone Manor and loved it. I had chosen this B&B because I had a conference to attend at the College of the Atlantic (COA), which is across the street from Cleftstone. In the registration materials from the COA, Cleftstone Manor was one recommended places to stay. I wasn't necessarily looking for a special place, I just wanted something close to the Conference. I was absolutely delighted from the minute I walked in. We were greeted most cordially and shown to our room. We stayed in the Benj. Stanwood room--one of the smallest and least expensive rooms there. But we were perfectly comfortable and the room, indeed the entire inn, was very charming in a 19th Century kind of way. Lots of cabbage rose wallpaper, lace, antique furniture, big claw foot tub in the bathroom, etc. Very pretty. Breakfast is from 8-9:30 AM. For the first three mornings, I was in a hurry because of the Conference, but the waitstaff was happy to rush things along for me. After that I slowed down considerably and just luxuriated over my Eggs Benedict or blueberry pancakes while listening to Pasty Cline and Ella Fitzgerald in the background. This really is a special place. From the helpful people to the last little bit of lace, I can recommend it without hesitation.

We stayed there for a night and turned in late to realize that the bed sheets were reeking of body odour. It seemed they had not changed the sheets in weeks!!! It was so late that we could not even go and complain to the owner. Truly disgusting!!! Also, the owner was rude. We had told the owner when we checked in that we wont be there for breakfast so she said she would make a bag for us to go. Then later, we went and told the assistant that we would be there for breakfast. I think the assistant never informed her. So, at breakfast time when the owner was serving people she kept giving us dirty and angry looks! God, the experience was awful!!
