Truly memorable
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/1/06
The service was exemplary.Yes a little disjointed with serving of meals in dining room but added to the experience.Staff at all times were pleasant and always smiling and helpful. These people definitely aim to please. The Splash bar was a great place to sit and relax..staff there were also very helpful and friendly.Beautiful surroundings of pool and gardens.Maintenace work was in progress but posed no problem.Rooms were serviced and cleaned every day.Reception staff acted immediately to a repair that needed doing in the room.I would definitely return to this hotel.

This place Rocks
By lets roll!, 3/23/06
What i dislike is the people bashing the Tongan culture in the other reviews. yes, you may have to wait an hour to get an answer to a question or an hour to get some service. This is Tonga, and taking your sweet lolly gingerly time in getting from A to B is part of the Tongan culture. However, once you receive service, it is remarkeable at how well people care for you, as long as you show patience. If you want quick service with no culture go to the four seasons resort in hawaii and pay 1000usd per night. Since the renovation this hotel is the tops, very clean, love the bar at the pool, the new bar inside, the restauarnats offer worldly dishes. Staff will go out of their way to aid you with whatever you desire or need. the weekly tongan style bufet and florr show are a key to the hotels atmossphere. centrally located a few minute walk to the open market for fresh fruits and vegetables. Soon it will have its own private beach across the road. This hotel is a bit pricey, but blows places like Fiji and hawaii out of the water in value.

I would definetly go back
By Karen, 5/27/05
The people there are FRIENDLY, including the staff. Bring a flashlight as the power has a habit of going out, not the hotel's fault but the electric company's. When the power goes out, the bar has a back up generator which makes for a cozy evening with your fellow guests. We were there March/Arpil(monsoon season) & our first class room had several leaks in the ceiling. It made for a memorable visit and the photos are priceless, if something like that bothers you then don't take a top floor room. Food was good in the dining room. Bring reading material, the TV is interesting but boring - sometimes the local TV chanel(s) just don't show the end of a film and you need to watch 3 or 4 nights to see the end! Like I said, memorable, but I couldn't have stayed anywhere else and would love to visit the DateLine again!

Dateline a little Dated
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/6/04
The Janfull International Dateline Hotel touts itself as the premier hotel in Tonga, and whilst the pool and surrounding are elegant they are a little jaded. The service is slow and pedestrian and pleasing the customer and minimising delay and undue duress appear to be foreign concepts. I waited nearly one hour to get an issue resolved at reception, and the attitude seemed to oscillate between indifference and quiet truculence. From my experience, there are probably hotel's which are a little less ostentatious and which provide better service. The hotel has a way to go to be a truly international hotel which is able to demonstrate the responsiveness to traveller's needs, and to identify this as a paramount objective and mission. I have travelled to 66 countries before Tonga, and I would have to say the hotel staff seemed to exist for themselves primarily, rather than for the comfort and enjoyment of their clients. Reception and The Spash Bar were particularly sloppy in terms of service, whilst laundry services and housekeeping were slow but friendly. I would still recommend the hotel, but I would advise you to lower your expectations accordingly.

international dateline hotel nukualofa tonga
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/25/04
We stayed there early June. The rooms left a lot to be desired even though we had a "superior Room" twin share. The amenities were sadly lacking as we had to ask for things like sugar, face cloths to be handed out as they were forgotten when the rooms were serviced. WE also had no hot water one night and no water at all 3 times in the one night. The restaurant could be a lot more inventive with the meals. We expected more local fare instead of frozen mixed veg served with the meal.
