a unique experience
By sandy, 10/28/05
THE OYSTER BOX HOTEL UMHLANGA ROCKS SOUTH AFRICA This hotel is situated overlooking the historical and famous landmark, the Umhlanga lighthouse and has sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. The building was built in the 1920s and has a distinct colonial feel to it. A low rise building with attached garden bungalows. Our executive suite (room 15) has breathtaking views of the ocean. Open your large French doors to a spacious balcony with table and chairs and experience the ocean at your doorstep. The suite consisted of a large bedroom with comfortable bed and TV. The lounge room consisted of parquetry floors table and chairs, fridge, TV and colonial furniture. The bathroom is a little on the small size but adequate. The reception area is very interesting with photos of famous people who have stayed here. There is plenty of sitting areas that are elegantly decorated in colonial and seaside furniture. There are two restaurants each excellent with a good food and wine menu. The Terrace Restaurant is situated overlooking the pool and ocean. An excellent place to sit and relax, drink a gin and tonic and take in the ocean air and views. The garden bungalows looked quaint and relaxing although they do not offer ocean views they are tucked peacefully within the tropical gardens. The patrolled swimming beach is a five minutes walk on the oceanfront promenade. This hotel offers a unique experience, although limited as say a five star hotel with all the modern conveniences; it has a lovely colonial ambience that draws on its historical past. PROS: Fabulous position overlooking the Indian Ocean and historical lighthouse. Excellent cuisine and restaurants overlooking a beautiful setting. The suites are comfortable and spacious offering colonial elegance. A fantastic stay and experience CONS: No lift, mini bar but nothing supplied. OVERALL: Just book it and enjoy the experience.

A Truly Wonderful Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/5/05
My family have been regular visitirs to the Oyster Box Hotel for over 25 years. I have stayed there several times & been dinner guests more time s than I can remember. The service is fantastic & the food is superb! We have entertained international visitors again many times as the overall standards of cuisine & service are exceptional. Whenever I return to Durban I ensure thst I dine there. It has become my second home.

A gorgeous place by the Indian Ocean
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/16/05
I have stayed at the Oyster Box on at least four different occasions and for at least a week on each occasion. The location by the ocean is superb. Service in the hotel is just excellent. A wonderfully comfortable place to stay.
