good location for world war II sites
By ,
Stayed here recently for a few days as a central location for exploring the World War II sites in Normandy - Bayeux is a pleasant small town and hotel has great location. Hotel is quiet, rooms are nice and reasonably spacious. No lift, so you'll get some exercise if you are on third (top) floor. Hotel has free wi-fi internet access (i did not persevere long enough to get this to work). Good range of half bottle wines in restaurant. One general note about eating in french restaurants - do not expect a fast meal. The pace of service/eating is very slow relative to UK/US standards and the hotel restaurant is no different. If you are visiting tapestry which is a few minutes walk, worth making the effort to get there as it opens.

The Best in Bayeux
By ,
This is a wonderful hotel -- professional, warm and friendly staff -- terrific service and fabulous cuisine. My husband and I just returned from our stay last week and we're already planning our next visit which will definitely include another stay at the Lion d'Or!!

Lovely hotel
By ,
My husband and I found the Lion d'Or to be quite charming and lovely. We enjoyed looking at the photos of all the important people (Eisenhower, the Kennedys, Tom Hanks, etc.) who have stayed here. The room we had was enormous and well appointed and looked out on the courtyard (which serves as the parking lot--a plus)so it was quiet. The fireplace made the lounge a nice place to sit and chat before dinner. Bayeux is such a lovely town and the Lion d'Or helped to make it one of our favorite towns in Normandie.

Good food/awful service
By ,
I had dinner at Le Lion d'Or several years ago. I had been looking forward to it for months, having read the history of the establishment. (Apparently it was Eisenhower's favorite restaurant in the area.)

While the food was good the service was truely, spectacularly awful. I suspect we were sitting at a table that had not been assigned to any particular waiter. We could see several fighting over who would "have to" wait on us.

Alternatively, we had 2 delightful meals down the street and around the corner at "Le Petit Normand". The food was very good and the proprietor (whose name I've forgotten) and his daughter, who waited on us, couldn't have been more gracious.
