on the way to the cruise ship
By Larry D, 12/14/09
stayed for one night, room was a bit smallish compaired to other courtyards, and a little pricerier than i expected. all in all the room was not bad. the restruant however, we went downstaris at 10 am on sunday moring and stood waiting to be seated of about 15 minutes. ther was at least 4 waiters and a host serving about 6 tables of people but every other table was dirty or had not been bussed. finally a table opened up and we sat down to wait another 15-20 minutes. when we decided to leave only to find that the front door was locked, the host said that they had just been too busy and had closed early. she directed us out the back door to re-enter the hotel from the pool. we went 2 blocks down the street and found a nice cafe, eggs, ham and toast with coffee and juice for $3.00. the staff at the hotel were very nice and allowed us to stash our bags until time to leave for the cruise ship.

The price structured spoiled the fun.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/16/09
I just left there today and I am still at the airport waiting for a connecting fligt .. They charge a fee for the room. If you stay in the room or go from the room to the street, you are fine. If you use the amenities, like the pool, casino, the bar, that falls under "resorts". There a seperate fee for the resort. If you park your car in the hotel parking garage there a fee for that . You learn about that parking fee when you check out. I would prefer to know about the fees in advance

Great Hotel. Only One Exception....
By Jeff R, 11/11/08
Good Location, great staff, rooms are clean. It's what you expect from Marriott. Staff was very professional and helpful. Definitely would stay there again. The only exception was the restaurant. Very over-priced. 17 dollars per person for breakfast. Served as a continential breakfast. Also, ordered seafood dishes for dinner, in both dishes, the seafood was over-cooked, the waiter dropped off the food and disappeared. When I complained to the dining room manager, all he did was bring us a free desert, which tasted like a protein bar. I recommend that you eat outside hotel. Unless you like overcooked and overpriced meals.

Timing of Maid Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/24/07
The maid service could use a lot of improvement. Usually, the maids should not be cleaning rooms while the guests are still in them...

Good \"budget\" place to stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/29/06
We paid ~$140 a day here. Compared to first-class hotels like the Ritz, this is not great- the water sometimes take a lil bit to heat up, the bathroom is small, the TV is "not a plasma", and there isn't much of a view per se. However, if you need to stay in a hotel, but don't want to pay too much (all hotels in San Juan are EXPENSIVE), this is a good choice. It is very clean, everything works well (including AC, TV, toilet, etc), and it is quiet. The nearby neighborhood is quiet and safe- there's a 24-hour cafe down the street with good Puerto Rican food. The maid service was good, and the internet connection was free. Complimentary Cont. breakfast that we did not partake. It's roughly $12-15 for a cab anywhere in SJ. Stay in Old San Juan if you want nightlife/tours, Condado for some shopping, and Isla Verde to be close to the airport, but Miramar has some solid value.

Worst Hotel Ever
By Deepa, 8/12/05
I hated this hotel. We expected this hotel not to be a three star hotel, however we were expecting a little more than what we got. We got there in time for check-in and they did not have our room ready. After waiting 3 hours we finally got a room. However the room was missing towels, no carpets on the floor and it looked a little musty. Our tub and sink broke down. Outside a lot of construction was going on. The service was horrible especially the front desk people. The front desk was not at all helpful. Their lack of manners and rude behavior ruined our experience. I would not recommend anyone staying in this hotel. Be warned!

The place was under construction and we were moved from one floor to another and the accomodations that we were supposed to have with the two beds after being told that it would be available the next day we were put into a room with very poor lighting...we did not complaint since we were out every day and basically used the hotel for sleeping. they do not have parking and had to pay for parking $84.00 for the week

Thanks Expedia for recommending this absolute dive
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/26/05
I hated (strong word, and I whole-heartedly mean it) Hotel Excelsior because of: 1. leaking ceilings, 2. urine stained toilet at check in, 3. multiple elevator malfunctions, 4. construction dust and equipment in the lobby, 5. mold smell in hallways and rooms 6. no parking whatsoever, valet parking offered at $12 (valets parked cars at curbside parking spots) 7. Expedia charged me for one night's stay because I cancelled the reservation when I saw what a rat-hole this place was... Things I liked about Hotel Excelsior: 1. that I left before I brought my bags to the room. (by the way, no bellhops. get ready to do some lifting after you find street parking a few blocks away) 2. nothing really, I hated it.

Location, location, location!
By TinManJones, 6/13/05
The location of the Excelsior alone is worth the price. The room was fine. If you plan on spending a lot of time in your hotel, maybe you shouldn't go to an amazing city like San Juan. The hotel was not immaculate, but the service was good and the location and price are superb. If you have ever been in a metropolitan city, you will not find this neighborhood to be objectionable in the least bit. I suggest renting a car at the airport and taking advantage of the friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff for planning your outings. The room could have used some updating and a balcony, but I am sure they will be working on that with the contruction (and raising the price). I couildn't care less about the hotel pool when I am on an island, but it did look somewhat small. All in all, I am very pleased with my decision to stay at the Excelsior and will go again in the future.
