Quiet and pleasant overall
If you don't want to eat at this resort and plan on doing nothing(no activities) other than relax/scuba dive this is a wonderful place. If you do want to eat here be forewarned. The prices are absolutely ridiculous, especially when compared to options 10 minutes away(plan to spend $20 round trip by taxi. Taxis are very accessible). As an example, they had the nerve to charge $87 per person for their Christmas Eve meal. It was not even average food. The entertainment was below high school fare. Also, the food selections, in general, are narrow, the eating is outside, except for dinner, and the service is not that exceptional.
We stayed from 12/24/2006 through 12/30/2006. For as busy a time of year that is, this resort was very quiet. There were plenty of available pool and beach chaises and tables. There was also a lot of shade available with numerous small palapas. Of course, there is always lots of sun available. The service poolside was very good and beachfront was non-existant. The pool itself was warmer than bathwater and not the least bit refreshing, but it was plenty spacious since most people avoided the hot water. There were no activities poolside. Scuba-Du is right on the grounds just a few feet from the pool area(extremely convenient.) They are a very decent scuba trip operator.
The rooms were very spacious and cleaned well, but they did have a problem with lizards that are everywhere, including the rooms. They are harmless, but my wife was not happy with Bill(I named him) hanging around the ceiling. The kids had their own pet lizard in their room as well. Their were also plenty of mosquitos or some other biting insects in the rooms, but no more than anywhere else. The service was outstanding except for the restaurant.
We are members of the vacation club already so pesky tour people did not bother us. Overall, the club is a good value especially when coupled with the priority club membership. We had ocean view second floor rooms in the 5000 wing. They had very nice balconies.
Eat dinner in town. There are many exceptional restaurants with great food, bottled water as the house water and purified ice, and wonderful ambiance(favorites included Pancho's backyard, Casa Mission and the French Quarter). Guido's is overrated. Stop in town for some foodstuffs to use for breakfast and the disposable utensils and plates/bowls. Expect to pay $60(family of four) for a very mediocre lunch at the resort.
We will go back! We will just be a bit more prepared with things to do between diving trips. The trips to town were not long and those mini-excursions were enjoyable! It would REALLY be nice if they would circulate cooler water into the pool though.
