Valhalla Inn Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay

This hotel is not perfect, it is a little run down and needs a facelift. However, it is definitely the best in Thunder Bay and the reason is the service. The people at the front desk especially Mike and Rob are very helpful. The pool and sauna are great to relax in, and the Timbers restaurant and Nordic Lounge are very acceptable. The food is varied and served by competent staff, in a friendly way. Overall it needs a facelift to get rid of the 70s style dark furniture and old carpets, but the people do go out of their way to be helpful and so the service makes up for the aging decor.

My husband spent the first part of the week at this hotel and I flew in to T.Bay to meet him, with our daughter to visit. We had a different room booked - as his was for business. When I saw his room,I decided to take a 'look see' at the room they intended to put us in. It was room 114 (his room had been 112) The room was not acceptable - neither was a different one that I checked, across the hall on the courtyard side. Room 112 is filthy. It has cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, the screen door does not work,the upholstery on the pull out as well as the armchair, absolutely disgustingly dirty - I asked at the front desk if any work has been done to the hotel in the last 12 yrs. (that was when the salmon coloured furniture was put in the rooms) and the front desk clerk said, "No". It shows. Perhaps some money should be put back into the rooms - the first floor is usually used for business people, but I had always liked the sunken living area and therefore, had requested that particular part of the hotel. We did not check in at all. I was given the price of $130. (quoted a corporate rate, although my husband was charged more than that?? for corporate) After viewing two different rooms, we left and stayed elsewhere. I am so glad as well, because the hotel we chose was spotless, friendly service and alot less expensive. I would never recommend the Valhalla in Thunder Bay to anyone.

I would like to start by saying you have a gorgeous hotel.We were at the Christmas party you held for your staff and it was incredible. As the wife of one your employee's I was treated awsome by the management and I felt very welcomed. Thank-you for the Great evening. I loved staying there and YES I will definatly be back. The only concern I had , being a Front Desk Clerk myself. If I ever checked a guest in the way I was checked in I would expect to get written up and reprimanded for the nastiness. From the moment I came to check in I was not looked at once . The attitude was totally uncalled for.Yes I can understand if she was lined up busy but it was only myself and another lady standing e at the front desk at the time , I did ask if it was possible to be by another inhouse guest.I was told just flat out no, she was not switching any rooms around that the room is pre booked and thats all I can do for you. I am soo sorry if i wasnt suppose to ask for that type of arrangement as all the rooms were per booked for us. I was only handed a piece of paper and told sign there. not even being shown where to sign,then she got quite rude with me when I asked her where to sign. Only being in your hotel a few times I wasnt sure of the way to get to the room as her direction to me were you take the far elevator take a right then a left and down the hall..Ok Was that the way to the elevator or my room? It was one of your maintenance men that showed me where my room was or i may still be looking for the room as your hotel is alot bigger than I thought.Upon check out I was unsure if she was going to be on desk again as i was leary of the same treatment, so we used your great technology of checking out on the television. That was a nice way of doing it. and oh by the way I must say how blown away at the awesome view we had of the mountains. Thank you so much for that. All in all we had a fantastic time you were all very warm and welcoming other than the one incident. I am so sorry but if I am one how many others are there that feel the same way. I thought you have the right to know. Even though this happened this will not dicourage us from coming and staying again. We loved it and will recommend your establishment to all our friends. I've stayed at this hotel a number of times. The staff is very friendly, the restaurants offer a wide variety of delicious food, the pool/hot tub/sauna are nice and the lobby fireplace is a nice place to have a coffee in the winter. I really think that this hotel is in need of a facelift. The furniture is out of date everywhere. The carpet, sofa, table, chairs, counter and bedding in the guest rooms are quite old and make the place look tired. Other than that, it has always been a very nice place to stay. I will stay at the Valhalla Inn again.
