Nice room, but eat elsewhere.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/25/09
First, I must say that the room and cleaning staff were excellent. That being said, I found the restaurant service to be incredibly slllllllloooooooowwwwwwww and the food overpriced. One of the kids ordered macaroni and cheese for supper. I expected it to be some sort of casserole of macaroni and parmesan or mozzarella cheese for $9.00. Turned out to be Kraft Dinner... for $9.00. Add that to a $26.00 entree that had such a small portion size (a half cup of gnocchi and a tiny breadstick) that you were still hungry afterward and finally the fact that every single meal we had there took a good 2 hours to arrive at the table and I am forced to recommend staying in the room, but arrange to eat in town. There are a number of excellent restaurants just down the hill that serve food that is better, twice as fast and 30-40% cheaper. Along Water Street, there are some great places for breakfast (Chef's), dinner (The Gables) and supper (The Harbourview). Oh, and there were no telephone books available. Our party had 3 rooms with not one telephone book nor was there one with the pay phone down the hall. Makes it difficult to arrange for outside dining but make the effort and go down town (make reservations in person if you have to, while shopping say or before you go whale watching). One other thing, we had chosen this hotel specifically because some members of our group wanted access to the golf course, only to be informed upon our arrival that they could not do so on Saturday because of a tournament that was being held in the afternoon. They were wiling to tee off at 6:30 am. Would have been nice to have some notice about this development when booking in the first place.

A very nice reprieve
By Paul, 02/21/07
This is a beautiful old hotel with charm galore. You can just picture the rich snobby NYC & Newport Elite who skipped over Bar Harbor strutting around with their 3 piece suits and sunshade umbrellas...It is a nice place to go and relax by the ocean take a deep breath, and let it out. Gardens were nice, staff very cordial, food & drinks were good. We were very pleased with The Fairmont Algonquin.

A Treasure on the Cold Rocky Coast
By A Yahoo! User, 11/17/06
If you want a place to sit by the ocean on the North Atlantic Maritime Provinces and just take in the beauty and character of Hotel that just simply captivates you, The Algonquin at St. Andrews is the place. The location is so tranquil. The gardens so fresh and as you walk along the grounds and admire the views and the sprawling hotel before you, its like you step back to the guilded age with this impressive coastal destination. We had a short stay at The Fairmont Algonquin, however memorable. The service was very attentive to our needs. My Grandmother was traveling with us and needed a little more attention then we did and the staff at the Algonquin were assertive and anticipated some of these needs. The rooms were comfortable and furnished with modern and new furniture however each room was reflective of a hotel that was over 100 years old in design. So the size of the rooms were smaller, and if you are looking for a modern newer hotel this isn't it. However if these are considered deficiencies I would have to say it more than makes up for it in quaint turn of the century charm. The Restaurant at The Algonquin was average by Fairmont standards however the meals were delicious and I would rate the experience as Good. A fun place to take the family and explore the cold rocky coast of St. Andrews.

*Love it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/29/05
This elegant hotle, is one of the nicest hotels that i have stayed at. It is such an amazing place. The sort-of old fashion/newly renovated style works and makes this hotel so unique. I strongly recommened this hotel to anyone. The rooms are incredible....and hey...steven speilberg wrote "The Shining" here!!!

A MUST come back again next summer.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/06/05
I found the hotel exceptionaly beautiful-the old style pillars and stairways bring out the old time charm. I found the activities extremely fun but the pool- in the summer tourist season- to be less open to towns people like usual and it brought down the fun to meet REAL locals of the town. The rooms where exquisite, the beds very soft. My only complaint is the menus should have more SPICE to them, you know bring out the old town charm which attracts so many people these days. Overall rating: Fun and relaxing!
