This Place Amazes Me

About two weeks ago, I was frantically checking every single review for hotels in Vancouver's downtown. My requirements were stringent - I was looking for something affordable, safe and somewhat nice.
After reading a number of reviews, I took a chance and eMailed the manager of the Sunset Inn. Impressed with his reply, I decided to take a chance and booked a room.
The only word that will do this hotel justice is 'wow'. The location is perfect - it is one block from Davie, right in the heart of the West End. Davie is a terribly funky neighborhood packed with great restaurants, interesting shops, and very friendly people. If you are interested in travelling around Vancouver, this hotel is very close to several different transit options. The thing I like the most is that the area seems very safe - I often ventured out after dark and always felt safe and at ease.
The rooms themselves are way beyond expectations. When I hear the phrase 'two stars', I think 'nice enough'. However, this place seriously redefines what a two-star hotel can be. It is difficult to trust pictures that you see online, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pictures don't actually do this place justice. Beds are beyond comfortable, suites have tons of room, and they are beautifully furnished with tasteful art on the walls (such a nice break from that traditional hotel wannabe 'art').
But, you actually go to the Sunset Inn for the service. Everyone I met at the hotel was incredibly friendly and actually overly helpful. It didn't feel like I was a guest in a hotel, it felt like I was staying in a friend's home. The difference between these two feelings is immense and every other hotel I have stayed in over the last two years (from big names to small independents) should go to this hotel to learn how to serve customers.
To conclude, the Sunset Inn & Suites would be a good deal at half the price they charge. Seriously, I found myself looking at the bill and shaking my head as 'there has to be something wrong here'. There was no mistake - this is the best value I have ever been witness to.
