Will Never Stay Again
By Dean, 1/19/10
It is old and rundown, no effort too remodel or update. The staff served no real purpose, but they were rude. It smelled very musky and moldy. My room was haunted by an old grandmotherly lady. I felt her presense constanly. The laundry room in the basement was a center for demonic activity, extremely creepy.

Don't stay here
By frequent visitor, 11/30/07
If you want to stay in an old, unkept hotel with no amenities in the lobby and just want a bed to crash in briefly than this is the place. The rooms are gross with old dishes, 50 layers of paint covering everything, bad bed, no actual view of the lake just close to it and a bathroom that fits one person under 200lbs. This place is for a tour of old history, not actually enjoying your stay overnight. And don't ask for a cot that was thrown overboard from the titanic.

Old and smelly
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/4/07
I was expecting turn-of-the-century charm, but what we got was a dirty and smelly room. It smelled like mildew, b.o. and old cigarettes. The place was totally creepy, but not in a good, interesting way like I was hoping for. The doors to each hotel room are huge and solid and mahogany; they look like coffin lids. When we opened our room, I just saw a bunch of mismatched turn-of-the-century furniture, complete with creepy chandaliers, combined with the cigarette and mildew smell, plus an air conditioner that was way too small for the room...all these things made me feel this place was dumpy and we'll never go back. Not worth the $$ that we paid, although it IS close to the lake front and I also thought the front desk staff was very nice and helpful. But I would rather stay in a clean place next time we visit Milwaukee.

Will stay again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/4/07
I loved nearly everything about my stay. It was like staying in someone's downtown apartment while they are out of town for the weekend. It did not have the cold anonymous feeling that you get at a Marriott or Hilton. My one complaint was that there was no water pressure in the shower. I do not know if this is consistant throughout the hotel, so I will ask the staff before my next reservation.

don't even think about it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/23/06
a half baked attempt at trying to upgrade. the entire building needs to be imploded and start all over. I asked specifically if there was adequate sleeping arrangements for 3 people. I was assured there was. Come to find out - not even close. Just one "double" bed in a jr suite. Daughter was brought in a roll away bed - it should have been a hammock. The blanket was old, nappy and smelly. The bathroom was non-functional. There was no counter space to even place a toothbrush much less any other toiletry items. We kept our toiletries outside the bathroom on the floor due to the lack of space. There are much better deals, financially, amenities, quality, room size and courteous staff on the same block.

Charming Hotel
By Joe, 4/10/06
I've stayed at this hotel numerous times over the years for business. The important thing to remember about the place is that it is a condominium hotel, and that each of the rooms is owned by a different person. This means that every room is decorated in a different style and that renovations aren't done by the management. Of the rooms I've stayed in, some have been to my taste and some haven't. I've always had a good experience with the staff, though. They're generally quick to respond to requests and will bend over backwards to help. This hotel has a very good location. It's on the edge of the main downtown area, close enough to get to everything without constantly being in the middle of traffic. It's just a few blocks from the art museum and the Summerfest grounds, and is located in a good neighborhood. Some of the suites have an excellent view of the lake. There are a few negatives about the hotel. The biggest problem is parking, which frequently sells out during big events, leaving people to park on the street. Another issue is the view. While some of the suites have a great view of the lake, some of the regular rooms just have a view of the parking lot. The quaint but friendly older feel comes with a price, too, as the entire building is almost eighty years old. Thus, during one of my recent stays, a broken water line forced me to change to a different room. Those items aside, though, I really enjoy going to the Knickerbocker. It has become a home away from home for me in Milwaukee, and I look forward to my stays there.

Awful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/16/05
This hotel was old, dingy and dirty. I was very disappointed and the location was not the best. The rate was over priced for the rooms you get. I would never go back.....

Look forward to next time
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/05
Great hotel with friendly staff. Special rates for efficiency apartments for 2 weeks stay offered to us. Five minute stroll to the lake front. Room ideal as has small kitchen as well. Perfect for us when we come over to visit our daughter. If you visit you must try the Alterra cafe on the lake front. 10 min walk. Hope to be back there next year.

If old and smelly is your thing...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/17/05
Check in was fast and efficient, but the good things stopped there. Hallways smelled of mildew, room was cramped and tiny, toilet stopped up regularly, if someone was watching TV in next room, you could hear the dialouge. I also think the room I was staying in was haunted. The room was done in Victorian style with black and white pictures of people hung around the room...it was just creepy. Totally creepy.

by the lake
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/29/05
I really liked being able to go downstairs to eat in the cold months of january and feb. The cab service was quick and the front desk was helpful. It is very centrally located to most opportunities in Milwaukee Would be great for the festivals
