Good Value and a Convenient Area
I visited the Doubletree in Norfolk for a family reunion in July 2005 and my stay was good. The rooms were spacious and clean. There's a free shuttle from Norfolk Airport and the pool is nice. If you want to pay a little more, the hotel also offers suites. The only problems that I had were the elevators (they're slow as heck) and the restaurant (called Morgan's, the food and service were horrendous). Also the cable tends to go out (its DirecTV and thunderstorms are common in the area).
What makes this hotel worth the stay was the area. Right next door is the Military Circle Mall (which includes Hecht's and JC Penney), across the street is JANAF Mall, and there are many restaurants and shops on Military Hwy and VA Beach Blvd. Adjacent to I-64, you are accessible to Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News. Also Colonial Williamsburg is an hour away. There is a public bus system, but you'll get around faster with a car (I rented a Hertz). Give yourself extra time though as traffic in the area tends to be heavy.
