A True Representation of San Antonio History!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/21/09
I work for hotels.com and have recommended this hotel to customers repeatedly without ever having stayed there myself. But I finally got my chance to try it out firsthand and I still stand behind those recommendations....even more now. I booked a last minute reservation for my birthday and was expecting to get a standard room with a double or queen bed with no view whatsoever. Boy was I wrong and a special thanks to a certain person for assigning us that room (you know who you are). We were assigned room #3056 which is actually in the older section of the Menger, the ORIGINAL Menger hotel. We opened the door to our room to find not only a king bed but also an AMAZING view of Alamo plaza from our large balcony. I believe there are only 6 rooms with balconies in this hotel and HA!, we got one of them. Most people go to San Antonio to experience the city's history. Well, if you stay in a Holiday Inn or some other sissy hotel like that, then you're not experiencing history. You can stay in a Holiday Inn ANYWHERE. Seriously, they could easily shut this hotel down and turn it into just a museum but they are doing YOU a favor by keeping it open as a hotel. Take advantage of your chance to experience history while it's still happening.

Babe Ruth Suite
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/16/09
By far the best hotel to go for a little relaxation. My husband and I stayed the weekend. The staff were very accomodating, room service was excellant, the size of the suite was spacious and roomy. The only dissappointment was that we didn't come across any ghost!!

Location is great but we expected more
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/04/08
The location is great. However our room was quite small and there was a step up to the extremely small bathroom. The front desk was not very willing to help when we inquired about directions. So we didn't bother to ask for a different room. The lobby is fabulous alot of historical display.

Be aware of hidden charges: We won't go back!
By newby, 10/23/08
Don't expect the manager, Hector Venegas, to give a flip about your concerns. We were charged for two meals at the hotel's restaurant on our room bill. We didn't even buy a coke in the hotel, much less eat there. It took 6 weeks to finally be reimbursed, no apology or even a kind word. The manager never called me back, after many requests. He just doesn't give a rat's behind about his guests. The rooms are way too pricey for what you get. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

I will not be back
By Robert, 07/25/08
The Hotel itself was O.K., rich with History. The room in which we stayed seemed as if were next to an airport for every night, every hour on the hour, it sounded like a jet engine outside our window. Got up the first night and looked out. Nothing there. It would make all kind of noise for about 5 minutes and then slowly subside. No airport, no train tracks. Stayed for 3 nights and never so glad to check out. Had the room not already been payed for I would have stayed elsewhere.

fun ghostly encounter
By Charlotte, 06/27/08
I picked this Hotel for its History for him and its hauntings for me. Neither of us was disappointed. The first night as we were leaving we encountered other guest complaining about what I wanted to experience. Unexplainable happenings that frightened them. This lady requested a room change and of course it was honored. The staff are extremely nice and accomidating. Our own personal experiences were incredible. We purposely went roaming the halls for both its history and anything unusual. While walking thru a very limited area in the hall on the 4 floor it was drastically colder and gave me goose bumps. Back and forth I would step into this area and out to test its consistancy. And without finding any visual explanation for this it was consistantly colder. It was later learned that we had been passing by the room the previous lady had requested to be moved from. My boyfriend the skeptic was still skeptical. Until the time he was opening our room door and he surprisingly looked at me and said it felt like someone was pushing the door back at him. Lol. Then there was the night we returned to our room to encounter a maid coming out of a room with a large white baby crib on wheels. The kind you saw in old movies that was in the hospitols. I could not believe my own eyes. Here she is in an old fashioned maid uniform. And did not even notice us. My mind said theres no way this nice hotel would be giving anyone a crib with the slats that far apart. Its the kind they cant even legally make anymore. We saw her open another door and swing that crib thru there incredibly fast. As she did this I looked at my boyfriend and said what were looking at is not real. He said what. I then shouted the same thing again and the maid didnt even act like she heard anything. I then said go after her see where she went. We both went to the door where she went and when we opened it.... it led to a old antique service elevator. There was not even enough room in there for her and that crib to fit in there. Unless she had the elevator doors locked open when she went in. But where is she now? We couldnt hear no elevator and when we pushed the button for it. Nothing happened except for hearing an old timey bell ringing sound. The front desk confirmed that they do not have a crib like that anywhere in the hotel. The ones they supply guest with are the new colapseble ones like you would find at wal mart and baby stores. I would definitely stay here again. I bought the book in the gift store about all the ghostly encounters of the Menger. Never have I had such an incredible experience. And it didnt cost any extra. If you love this stuff like I do then I really hope you stay and have the encounters that you so desire. Unfortunately with Ghost their are no guarantees. God Bless and thank you Menger Inn and all who dwell there.

THe Menger Hotel was a great place to stay the history of the hotel was great to be around. And the location was awsome. Historical class hotel but not pricey
By R., 03/18/08
If you are into historical places with class, where history has been made, and with a good measure of quality at an affordable price this is it. It has so much valuable historical value. Start by just looking at some of the photos on the wall. I suggest to specify the old section with a front street view. Does not have a real noise problem like some SA hotels. Sunday morning buffet is to die for! Menger Bar for a quite drink.

Haunting experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/25/07
this hotel was great. had great location, and i think everything i heard about it was true... i woke up at about 3 in the morning on a friday night to a creeping sound coming from the closet. i was with my wife, so i woke her up to see if we heard the same sound. i got up quietly and walked to the closet. once i opened the door, there was nothing there and no more sounds. i get back in bed and fall asleep.. once i get into a dream, again, the noise becomes even louder and i hear a voice, and a thump sound. i get up to go listen, put my ear to the closet, and nothing. not one single sound. next morning i ask the front esk whats up with that noise, and they tell me that this place is supposed to be haunted...lol.. so if you saty here, beware and enjoy!
