Driftwood Shores Resort and Conference Center, Florence

Driftwood has the potential to be great. The view is awesome and you can walk right out on the beach and go for miles. However we have had some pretty serious service issues the las two stays. Some unresolved repair issues. For the money the rooms are not updated and the only single rooms that do not have full kitchens are queen. The beds are not comfortable and the pillows are flat. If they would update a litte and work on some service issues they would be an unbeatable hotel. For now I can say it is great for views and access but not comfort and service.

We love to be at Driftwood Shores and have come several times, just our family and also with our extended family. The units are very comfortable, the beach is wonderful, the pool is great, the restaurant was convenient and the food very good, and the staff were pleasant and helpful. This summer we had eight families there and we all had a marvelous time. It is close to all the things we like to see & do in Oregon. The Aquarium, the ocean tide pools, the seals, crabbing, clamming, catching crayfish in the river, flying kites on the beach, walking/running on the beach, beach-combing (we found many perfect sand-dollars this year), playing on the sand dunes, swimming in the lake, hiking, picking black berries, the lighthouse, Devils Churn, sunsets. I could go on, but needless to say we had a grand time and will come again.

The rooms are out dated and poorly kept up. The electrical system is poor also. You can not run the microwave with anything else in the kitchen and when taking a shower the lights in the bathroom kept going out on us. But the best thing about the hotel is the fact that they have their own sewer plant out side your room. It is right there in the parking lot for your viewing pleasure. Sorry, but I just can't see spending your hard earned money staying at this place. Go to Newport or Lincoln City for a stay- ANY motel in these towns would be better than DSR!!!!

Terrific location is spoiled by a poorly constructed hotel. If you're a light sleeper you'll hear too much from adjacent rooms including talking, plumbing noises, etc.

We needed a place to rest and unwind after a crazy week with a 100 kids. This was it! We walked out the back door of our room and found all we had been looking for... an increible view... quiet... rest. Thanks

Unfortunately that is about the only good thing that I have to say about our visit. We were looking forward to 4 nights of enjoying the great beach access and a room with a king bed and kitchen. I won't bore you with details but here are the highlights:
- Room wasn't ready by check-in time; were told to come back in an hour with no apologies
- Room wasn't exactly clean; kitchen counter had not been wiped down, walking barefoot was not pleasant
- Bed was extremely hard and, judging by the bites that my wife had on her leg after one night, had some kind of bugs.
- Shower did not drain. Not only was this annoying but showed that either it hadn't been cleaned recently or the staff just didn't care that it didn't work. Neither would be surprising.
- Furnishings are very dated and worn - it looks like they haven't updated anything since it was built.
- Sound insulation was unacceptable - you hear neighbors blowing their nose like they are in the room and I don't even want to talk about the kids running around in the room above us until 1:30 AM (a call was made to the front desk at 12:30 and again no apology was offered)
In their defense we didn't mention any of these issues at checkout so didn't give them an opportunity to make things right. We were so tired and stressed that we didn't want to deal with it.
In retrospect we should have taken notice of the fact that they are not AAA rated. I can now see why. There is no way their service and comfort level warrants the cost. We found the Elizabeth Street Inn in Newport as an alternative and were very happy.

Book early as rooms are hard to get. Adults only in pool after 9 is a nice plus. It's real windy on the beach so bundle up good.Bar is nice and soothing with beautiful sunset views but,
Find a good restaurant in the Florence Historical District as service leaves a lot to be desired.
