El Capitan Resort Casino, Hawthorne

My kids (well, two of them) and I were on our way to Boise, Idaho, to attend my younger brother's wedding. I was tired and couldn't make it to Winnemuca, Nevada, as planned. This place did the trick for us. It was friendly, quiet, and clean (and a decent deal at $51.52). My youngest daughter (Mimi) and I ate breakfast at the El Capitan Casino while my oldest daughter (Penelope) slept in. It was a fine breakfast (Mimi loved her French Toast) and kept us sated until Winnemuca, Nevada.

I was on a weekend fishing trip at Walker lake with some guys from corporate when we stumbled on the extravagant El Cap. We had read some other reviews which made us a bit sketchy of the place. If you have read these other rviews, please disregard them. I am sure they are all from disgruntled non winning patrons. I was pleasantly surprised upon entering the spacious corporate suite. It had a large living room with one large bedroom, small bar (with coffee pot) and bathroom. I give a 10 for cleanliness. Enough money came out of the casino to make our trip almost free. The restaurant has great prices and fantastic food. The fishing did not prove to be so great for us this weekend. However, with the awesome stay at El Capitan the weekend was an overall 8 out of 10. Don't forget to walk down the street and have some drinks with the crowd at Barley's sports bar. Small but fun bar. Dan H.

Thinking this was an alternative to a better place in town, I was sadly wrong! Only room ammenties were a poor TV and refrigerator who's door opened of it's own will, not even an alarm clock. King sized bed was like a slab of concrete and non-smoking room had a terrible smell. Only the packaged soap was safe with shampoo provided from some diapitated wall dispenser. Plastic window curtains and corroded water fixtures added to the nuance of filth. Then the office personnel, three of them, couldn't figure out how to produce a correct billing sheet! Ineptness, grimy and long abandoned attention to room condition make this a place to definitely avoid!

We have stayed at the El Cap twice now and have enjoyed the stay both times. The people are friendly and willing to help with just about everything. The rooms were comfortable and the only thing missing was a coffee pot but since we have run into this at other places we carry our own so no problem. Would recommend this place to anyone.

As long as you pack your bug spray, Lysol and shower shoes you should be just fine. The rooms are very primitive with lack of amenities. However there is a bonus, the room is nicely illuminated with lights that have dead cockroach carcasses in them giving the room a cozy feel. The sad thing is that the El Cap advertises itself as the "gem" of Hawthorne, which is unfortunately true.

The town is just the place for our family to move to. This place made the difference to us all. We were three generations visiting the town and they convinced us to look to coming back with more of the family (ages 85- new born) and the areas fishing is well enjoyed by the males up at the lake while those of us left behind could eat, gamble and find out more about the local activities. Wonderful visit.

I took a bad fall while leaving the El Capitan Motel. The slope was not marked properly for a drop off leading to the parking lot. I filled out a accident report and spent 5 1/2 hours having catscans and exrays taken in the emergency room at the hospital. The manager called the hostital and refused to except any resposibility for covering any and all costs. My glasses were bent and scratched. I had just started my vacation, heading for Oregon for two weeks. Lousy PR received from the Manager etc.
