Hotel Phillips, Kansas City

We called the week before and the morning of our arrival to inform them we were coming in early and needed our rooms by 1pm. They were very friendly, but when we arrived the rooms weren't ready and they didn't seem to care or remember they had promised to 'take care of us'. Really? Then our LG flat panel televisions were terrible in both rooms! They must have bought a defective batch of TV that can't be brightened... there is NO menu control for brightness or contrast and it was constantly irritating to watch the dark screen. We ended up watching TV from our laptops. And the staff didn't seem to care and pretended not to not or see the difference. REALLY!

We stayed at hotel phillips over the weekend and we paid in cash. Upon entering our prison cell like room we weren't too happy. Additionally this company charged us $250 on our credit card claiming we smoked in our room and we don't even smoke! We called their accounts payable and reported the error and they claim it was not, additionally my friend who is a health nut and would never smoke in their life was charged the same faulty fee. Do no visit here this place fools you by their pictures and if your an out of stater watch your credit statement!

This hotel might have been nice about 50 years ago. The staff is very rude and they act like their hotel is the nicest, most exclusive hotel around. There is nothing good about the rooms, the TV's and furniture are old, there is not a view, and the bed isn't anything special. The best place about this hotel is the lobby and bar/restaurant. I have stayed in $40 hotels that are every bit as nice as the Hotel Philips and much friendlier.

I bought a Groupon to use during the Big 12 Basketball tournament at the Hotel Phillips. The date I bought it for was NOT on their list of black-out dates for the Groupon. The Groupon is for a Superior type room, which they have available on the date I need. But the hotel WILL NOT honor my Groupon on that day Deciding to basically black-out that weekend AFTER the Groupons were sold is a pretty crummy way to do business, IMHO.

My husband and I booked a room for our wedding night thinking this would be a beautiful place to finish up our special day. My husband called to check in after we first booked our room and a couple days before to make sure everything was in order. He was told both times that as this was wedding night, the hotel would make sure it was special for us. They certainly have a different idea of what special is. He went to check in early and had to speak to 3 different people before he was able to get checked in, we were told this would be no problem. We showed up and got to our room with no issues. After a couple hours, we ordered a pizza (a place around the corner the front desk recommended). When my new husband went to go get our delivery, he was shoved in the elevator by 2 drunk guys who were mad he wouldn't share his pizza. While this in no way is something the hotel could have controlled, it is something potential guests should know. The Power and Light District is right around the corner and there were several drunk guests we noticed in the short time we were out of our room. The room was nice but nothing I would call spectacular. Upon departure we had extra charges. They charged us for local calls! So, just use your cell phone if you stay here. The hotel staff were complacent and unimpressive. We've had better service at a Holiday Inn. Buyer beware!

We stayed one night at the Hotel Phillips, and it was amazing. We were on the 18th floor. The room was comfortable, the bed was so comfortable, I didn't want to get up! 2 thumbs up!

Beautiful old hotel, clean and spacious rooms, great beds, awesome staff. Stayed there for five days the first week of August, record high temps pushed the AC beyond capacity so we had a couple days where it was too warm in the rooms. Staff provided a fan for my room, were very apologetic about it, but it wasn't like it was their fault. Some of my staff complained a lot (kind of a prima donna though), but I'd definitely go back again the next time I go to KC.

This is a beautifully kept art deco hotel built in 1931. The lobby will wow you as soon as you walk in the door. I've never stayed in a hotel where the staff were more genuinely friendly. Even when power went out for hours due to construction up the road, staff assisted with everything and even encouraged me to go to the bar for a drink on them! Beautiful and clean room with Aveda bath products. I will be staying here again in October for a conference at the convention center (only 1 block away) and am looking forward to it!

Does not meet the value of a 4-5 star hotel. Dirty and cramped rooms. Not up to par with what a 4 start or higher hotel offers for rooms.

My husband and I needed a quick, romantic overnight getaway. Upon researching Kansas City Romance online, several hotels came up, but the one that stood out was the Hotel Phillips "Romance Package" which included chocolate covered strawberries, a dozen roses, sparkling wine, a $50 gift card for either the Chop House, 12 Baltimore, or in room dining, and a King Executive room. The price seemed a little high, but upon speaking with a few friends who recommended the place, I thought it might be worth thinking about a little more. I waited a little bit, and the price went down. When that happened, I jumped on it. My husband and I arrived to valet parking and a friendly and professional staff at check in. Upon opening our room, the iced down bucket of sparkling wine and a chilled dish of chocolate covered strawberries awaited. On the desk was a gorgeous arrangement of red roses. We enjoyed a romantic start to our evening. Later we went to the Chop House. I was curious as to whether or not the reservations had been made, as when we booked the package, they asked us if they could make the reservation for us, and indeed, they did. The meal was devine. Some of the best food I have ever had in my life. Next, my husband and I enjoyed a nightcap and live music at 12 Baltimore. What a great time! After a wonderful evening on a King bed resplendant in goose down comforter and soft pillows, we awoke to the Sunday paper outside our door, and ordered a breakfast in bed. Oh my goodness, I can't even begin to tell you how flavorful the Creme Brulee' French Toast was...in fact, everything was "melt in your mouth" wonderful. Sigh. It was great to remember that we are husband and wife, and not just mom and dad. I would highly recommend the romance package to anyone who wants a spark in their relationship and a night to remember. The only thing that detracted from the evening at all was the unsightly road construction and new building construction going on downtown. As we never left the hotel facilities though, it did not present a problem for us. 5 Stars!!
