A beautiful place to sleep...
By Vicki, 09/02/09
We stayed one night at the Hotel Phillips, and it was amazing. We were on the 18th floor. The room was comfortable, the bed was so comfortable, I didn't want to get up! 2 thumbs up!

Great hotel, great price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/26/08
Beautiful old hotel, clean and spacious rooms, great beds, awesome staff. Stayed there for five days the first week of August, record high temps pushed the AC beyond capacity so we had a couple days where it was too warm in the rooms. Staff provided a fan for my room, were very apologetic about it, but it wasn't like it was their fault. Some of my staff complained a lot (kind of a prima donna though), but I'd definitely go back again the next time I go to KC.

Beautiful hotel providing excellent service!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/10/08
This is a beautifully kept art deco hotel built in 1931. The lobby will wow you as soon as you walk in the door. I've never stayed in a hotel where the staff were more genuinely friendly. Even when power went out for hours due to construction up the road, staff assisted with everything and even encouraged me to go to the bar for a drink on them! Beautiful and clean room with Aveda bath products. I will be staying here again in October for a conference at the convention center (only 1 block away) and am looking forward to it!

Priceline Nightmare
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/20/08
Does not meet the value of a 4-5 star hotel. Dirty and cramped rooms. Not up to par with what a 4 start or higher hotel offers for rooms.

We had a great time!! A wonderful place to stay!
By Delana, 09/18/07
My husband and I needed a quick, romantic overnight getaway. Upon researching Kansas City Romance online, several hotels came up, but the one that stood out was the Hotel Phillips "Romance Package" which included chocolate covered strawberries, a dozen roses, sparkling wine, a $50 gift card for either the Chop House, 12 Baltimore, or in room dining, and a King Executive room. The price seemed a little high, but upon speaking with a few friends who recommended the place, I thought it might be worth thinking about a little more. I waited a little bit, and the price went down. When that happened, I jumped on it. My husband and I arrived to valet parking and a friendly and professional staff at check in. Upon opening our room, the iced down bucket of sparkling wine and a chilled dish of chocolate covered strawberries awaited. On the desk was a gorgeous arrangement of red roses. We enjoyed a romantic start to our evening. Later we went to the Chop House. I was curious as to whether or not the reservations had been made, as when we booked the package, they asked us if they could make the reservation for us, and indeed, they did. The meal was devine. Some of the best food I have ever had in my life. Next, my husband and I enjoyed a nightcap and live music at 12 Baltimore. What a great time! After a wonderful evening on a King bed resplendant in goose down comforter and soft pillows, we awoke to the Sunday paper outside our door, and ordered a breakfast in bed. Oh my goodness, I can't even begin to tell you how flavorful the Creme Brulee' French Toast was...in fact, everything was "melt in your mouth" wonderful. Sigh. It was great to remember that we are husband and wife, and not just mom and dad. I would highly recommend the romance package to anyone who wants a spark in their relationship and a night to remember. The only thing that detracted from the evening at all was the unsightly road construction and new building construction going on downtown. As we never left the hotel facilities though, it did not present a problem for us. 5 Stars!!

Run, dont walk, away from this one
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/07/07
The physical facility is very nice and obviously they have put quite a bit of money into the rennovation. The staff is appalling however, and there seemed to be no adult management visible in the entire place. My waitress insulted me at breakfast, and when I complained to the manager he offered to comp me the meal. I own two multimillion-dollar businesses with many employees and if she were my employee I would have fired her on the spot. Room service took an hour routinely. The coffee cups were filthy every morning and I had to send them back each time. My nonsmoking room reeked of cigarette smoke drifing up from downstairs. The valet gave me wrong directions and I got lost. The entire staff seemed hostile, as though they were somehow better than the guests. I am from the west coast and used to good hotels. This place would not make a Motel 8 in San Francisco. Never is a long time, but I would NEVER stay at this place again. I left early because I was afraid the staff was so out of control that my room might be ripped off.

An Historic, Architecural Gem!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/19/07
My husband and I flew to KC last weekend to attend a family wedding, staying overnight unfortunately. Prior to our trip, I thoroughly researched every hotel in town. My criterion was specific; I wanted to spend a warm and cozy, romantic evening at a newly renovated downtown boutique hotel that exuded Art Deco Architectural/Aesthetic charm, was affordable, meticulous, smoke-free, and employed personnel who define the terms "hospitality" and "customer service". I kept returning to Hotel Phillips' slick and inviting website. I made the very best choice. Hotel Phillip's is an absolute gem! My husband is an architect and I teach art, so we appreciated the exquisitely decorated and well-maintained lobby and front desk area. I had requested a room with a view. At check-in, we were automatically upgraded at no additional cost to a non-smoking 19th floor room. The hallway was very quiet (love the intricately carved crown-molding). Our room was beautifully contemporary (exactly like the photo), spotless and just the right size; it included a small seating area with a lovely sofa, gorgeous silk pillows, ottoman, and desk. The dark wood blinds and rich decor was a delightful change. The bedding was heavenly, and we loved the bathroom faucet. We were especially blown away by the personal attention given to us by Jason, Executive Sous Chef (dinner was amazing), the charismatic helpfulness of Guest Services Manager, Michael, the friendliness of the women who checked us in Saturday night, and by the quick and courteous valets. What a superb property! We plan to stay (at least 2 nights) at Hotel Phillips when we fly in for the next family wedding in 2008.

Best hotel experience ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/21/06
This hotel is beautiful and EVERY SINGLE employee we came in contact with was so friendly and helpful and willing to do anything to make our stay better. The rooms are beautiful and the beds are SO comfortable, big, and fluffy. It seems to be in a good location. I was there for a conference held in a nearby hotel so I was not able to travel around very much. The busses are only $1.25 and it was a short trip to get food and go shopping on the weekend. Late on Saturday night, my friend and I went to the bar inside Hotel Phillips called '12 Baltimore'. It was our last night in the city and we were looking for dessert and coffee. When we walked in we were unaware that last call had just been announced. However, our waitress was happy to serve us anyway. She even made coffee for us, even though they had just cleaned out the coffee pots. We both ordered the chocolate cake, which was absolutely amazing. I wish I could remember her name, but I want to thank her and let her know that she made our night!! Our stay at the Hotel Phillips was truly amazing and I would highly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a beautiful, friendly, comfortable, and classy place to stay.

Lovely & Historic Art Deco
By Concetta, 10/01/06
I work for a company based in Kansas City so I travel there several times a year. The bad news is that I am limited to which hotels I am allowed to stay. The good news is that this hotel is one of them. I love this hotel - it is one of my favorites. It is unique in its look and décor – newly renovated while maintaining all of its original art deco charm. 2 on-site restaurants are both very good. The rooms are beautifully appointed, as are all of the public areas. The beds are very comfortable and the renovated bathroom is modern yet fits in with the historic look – and the faucet is very cool. If you have to stay in downtown Kansas, and you want a hotel with more charm and ambiance then a generic “chain” hotel, this is for you.

A step back in time
By Janice B, 07/21/06
I just spent three nights at the Hotel Phillips. It was everything that I had read about it. Walking into the hotel was like taking a step back in time. The lobby is small, but elegant in Art Deco design. I highly recommend the Breakfast in Bed package. Received breakfast each morning exactly at the time requested. Food was wonderful (especially the creme brulee french toast!),was presented nicely and had been freshly prepared before delivery!! Had dinner twice at 12 Baltimore located just off the hotel lobby. I have never had food as good in a hotel restaurant. They have a spinach salad that is the best and most unique I have ever eaten. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. The staff was very polite, very helpful and considerate and the valet staff brought the car around in a timely fashion. I would definitely like to spend another few days at this hotel....definitely worth spending a few dollars more than a chain hotel.
