The place is haunted...stranges experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/9/10
I know, you think this is a joke but someone joked to me that it was haunted and I ignored it. The first sign of something strange was that the chocolate on my pillow had a bite taken out of it. Once again I thought that it was part of the alure and that they did it to everyone. Then the phone in the room didn't work. Then...all night from what I thought was the next room was the sound of people having loud sex...I mean screaming and all. This went on for hours. When I told them at the front desk in the morning they looked kind of strange at me because there was no room next to mine! To this day I don't know what it was all about.

Excellent Service!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/18/09
We celebrated our son's rehearsal dinner in the garden/courtyard area. The food was delicious, setting lovely, and service wonderful. We were very impressed with Stacey the general manager. She went out of her way to tend to details including remembering our request to have Irish music playing in the background. She followed through with such things as putting favors and name cards at each place setting. There was a threat of thunderstorms and she volunteered to have both the outside and an inside room ready just in case of inclement weather. Stacey was pleasant and professional from the planning to the actual event. Thanks to her and her staff, we had a memorable evening in a beautiful, historic location.

Avoid this place on weekends
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/19/09
After a day of sightseeing in St. Louis, I was looking forward to relaxing in our room on a Friday night. Instead, I heard loud, live band music coming from the bar below until midnight, followed by loud talking from patrons lingering down there. I was told by staff that this is what's done on Friday and Saturday nights. Wish I'd known ahead of time; I wasted my good money on a room that offered no peace. Too bad, because the place was clean and cozy otherwise.

Terrible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/30/08
Be aware of your room ! Hotel staff checked out our room when we came back the hotel after sightseeing. Also, they threw out our important things that we requested them to keep their refrigerator. We blamed this to hotel manager thru email, voicemessage. But she ignored all. We couldn't meet hotel manager. They are terrible.

Horrible Management - BEWARE!
By Gary C, 3/14/08
I am a frequent business traveler to St. Louis and decided to try the "quaint" Seven Gables Inn. I booked my room 3 weeks in advance and upon arriving I was told that they were over-booked and that they would have to put me up elsewhere. All of my business is in Clayton and they sent me to a hotel in downtown St. Luois...WAY out of the way. I was tld by their manager Stacey Wallace that my room charges would be refunded and as I write this, they have still not been refunded. I would advise to not take a chance at staying at this hotel. The management is deceitful and VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! There are many other great options in Clayton and I would advise you to go elsewhere.

Worst Hotel Experience ever, on our 1st anniversary
By ElisabethW, 9/10/07
My husband and I wanted to spend our 1st anniversary at a nice quaint hotel with a Jacuzzi. If you don’t want to read the whole review, know this: They screwed up our reservation and we didn’t stay at the hotel. We wasted a trip to St. Louis and all of our time at the hotel only to drive back to Springfield on our 1st anniversary. All the people we dealt with were completely incompetent. I researched online for hours to find the Seven Gables Inn. I was pleasantly surprised when I called to book our reservation to find that we could reserve the only room with a Jacuzzi in it (the only one in the hotel at all, according to her, since they only have about 30 rooms) for Saturday August 12th. When we arrived at 4pm to check-in, there was a guy sitting at a desk who seemed like the manager. He checked us in, after 10 minutes of waiting, and before we left for our room I asked to confirm that this was the room with the Jacuzzi. He said, “Oh, let me check.” He then proceeded to spend another 10 minutes figuring it out. A lady came in to help him, and they were discussing the options. He seemed completely inept at his job, having problems figuring out how to check us in. The other lady didn’t seem to be much help. However, everything seemed to work out fine, they gave us the room number and directed us. We went up to the 3rd floor with all of our stuff and then of course, it was the wrong side of the hotel. There are only 30 rooms, split into two, half to the left of the check-in desk, half to the right. We figured out after taking all of our stuff up the stairs that it was the wrong half of the hotel. We then went to the other side of the hotel with all of our stuff. We entered the room, and of course, no Jacuzzi. Well, it’s August in St. Louis and the hotel was having air problems, so we were extremely sweaty. My husband went downstairs to see what the issue was, and of course, when he came back up to the room, he said they didn’t actually have a room with a Jacuzzi. The people that we had been dealing with offered to take $60 off the price of the room. Not exactly enticing considering, it was probably about the same we’d pay for the room WITHOUT a Jacuzzi anyhow. We were so upset with all the time that had been wasted we chose not to stay at the hotel at all. After all, the ONLY reason we were going to stay there was for the Jacuzzi. Because we’ve never spent much time in St. Louis, we didn’t know of other hotels that would have a Jacuzzi still available on such short notice on a Saturday night. I had spent a few hours researching online three weeks prior and had only found Seven Gables Inn. So, on our 1st anniversary, we ended up driving back to our hometown, Springfield, IL, hoping we’d find someplace. We had to cancel our dinner reservations and know we weren’t going to go to the museum or any of the other places we had planned for the next day. What a disappointment. Luckily, things worked out okay for us in Springfield, but it was easily the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. The hotel looks cute, but I wouldn’t take my chances on a hotel so poorly run.

Musty old hotel...
By PennyV, 7/10/07
It is a charming hotel with a great location and friendly staff, but it is an old musty building. Checked into our very nice room, the a/c was blasting and we could smell mold permeating the place. Turned off a/c. Our windows were painted shut even though they had screens on them. Fresh air might have helped. Stayed the night, but checked out the next morning with stopped up sinuses. We were supposed to stay another night. The bed was also saggy and made for a very uncomfortable night. Won't go back.

Stayed here during Christmas
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/27/07
We liked it. Our room was large and comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly. It was very quiet while we were there since it was over Christmas and the restaurant owners invited us in for a glass of wine on the house. We would stay there again. It is a charming, homey place.

Not 100%, probably wouldn't go back
By JuliaC, 4/15/07
While I agree with other reviewers that the location is terrific, our 2-night mid-week stay was not exactly the same rosy experience. I'm not usually picky, as long as the room has a comfortable bed, is clean and quiet, I'm satisfied. But a couple of things really put me off. The Seven Gables definitely has a lot of character and I liked the furnishings in the room. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed during our visit so we didn't get a chance to check it out. The one thing that bothered me most occurred the morning we left. They provide a very nice continental breakfast. The hotel manager came in and chatted up the only other people in the room. She completely ignored my 2 teenage daughters and me. She didn't even look at us, much less greet us, and we were seated at the table next to the couple she was talking to. I found that unprofessional since we'd booked 2 rooms for 2 nights. It's not a big place and it definitely wasn't full. I would hope that a competent hotelier, particularly in a small property, would be aware of how many guests she has. It left me with a feeling that we weren't at all appreciated. I wouldn't go back. While they kept the room clean, housekeeping didn't dispose of an empty water bottle or the used and cold styrofoam cup of coffee in the bathroom, nor did they replenish amenities, despite the generous tip left for them. The carpet in several areas needs to be stretched.

Our guests were impressed
By Mira, 9/26/05
There is no other hotel in St. Louis quite like the Seven Gables Inn, a historic and charming hotel nestled in the Clayton business district. When I used to work at Washington University, we put guest writers up at this hotel. During our conferences, writers would gather in the bar spontaneously and continue academic discussions over a glass of wine late into the night. The cozy and intimate atmosphere inspired our writers, who were used to being put up at nice hotels where all of the rooms felt the same. We never received a single complaint about the hotel, the service, or the restaurant. I would bet that by now, this hotel--or a fictionalized version of it--has made its way into a novel, or a poem. This inn is not quite of this world. It is a place to remember, a place to invent, and a place to dream.
