Like staying in an apartment
By Jeremy, 05/08/09
This property is essentially a collection of buildings: the main building which is structured like a hotel sits right on the beach; the rest are basically condos across the street. We opted to save a few dollars and get a garden view room, which put us in a unit across the street, and on the third floor. The room was clean and very well-stocked with lots of household and kitchen wares. AC was a challenge, as the only unit was in the front room and it did not cool the bedroom. Nice lanai overlooking a little courtyard. Lots of little beaches in walking distance, and an outdoor market and miniature Waikiki-like tourist center just north on Alii. Two complaints: The desk staff were rude and curt. Secondly, about half of the units appeared to be people's full-time living quarters and, based on the smell of smoke and unclean living quarters in the air, the loud screaming fights we heard, and the unsavory characters hanging about, I'm guessing that they are very inexpensive apartments when they aren't being rented out as condos. Last note: if you are across the street from the main hotel, don't plan on sleeping in late unless you bring earplugs; the birds are EXTREMELY loud starting about 2 hours before dawn (but you can't really blame Castle for that...birds will be birds).

great vacation spot
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/20/08
We stayed in an "ocean vue" unit (E21) and loved it Would recommend this place to anyone. However, looks like construction on building North of Kona Reef could become a hassle,as ground floor just about complete. For us, noise was not a problem

Great view & will stay there again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/07/07
I stayed at A-14 for 5 days. It is a second floor, oncean front unit. It provides a great view of ocean. It's perfect for watching sunset. There is a parking garage, so your car will not be baked in the sun. It is true that there is construction on the north side of the building. But, I did not hear any construction noise from my units. As bedrooms are facing courtyards, you can hear birds and occasionally people walking by from your bedroom.

The "Big Island Rocks"
By Nicki D, 08/30/07
We were fortunate enough to be booked into room D4 at the Kona Reef...it was fabulous!! Clean, ground level and 30 feet to the edge of the ocean, quiet, wonderful lanai to enjoy our meals and cocktails on. Watching the parasails, cruise ships and stepping out to see the turtles right in front of us on the beach. The pool area was very clean. The bbq's could of been a bit hotter, and it would be nice if the pool area stayed open after 10 at night for those of us whom enjoy a nice relaxing hot tub before settling in. Overall, we loved it and can hardly wait to return. Aloha....

Good value for price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/03/07
We loved our ten days here. note there is a difference between ocean view and ocen front... the view is from a slant-back porch but is better in some ways because it is out of the sun. Spotless whirlpool, poolside and BBQ grills. Roooms Clean with no mold. Average daily cleaning (10 min for a crew of 3) and a bit of noise fomr the neighboring construction but not before 7AM. The best is it is in walking distance to old Kona. We would go again. The big island rocks!

The 'condo' gotcha
By John, 05/28/07
The Kona Reef is actually a condo complex and every room is actually maintained by the people who own it. The result is there is not a lot of quality control on the rooms. In particular, our room (C21) had a HORRIBLE bed, rock hard and older than Methusleah. We tried to use the foldout in the living room, but it was falling apart. We finally took the mattress fromt he fold out and put it on the bed and it made it *tolerable*, but just barely. When we complained about it, we were told these were individual units. What a wonderful out for them! Sell it as a hotel, but don't take responsibility if things in the room are bad! WARNING: If you like to sleep past 7am, you won't like this place, as there is a major construction project next door (and I DO mean nextdoor)! If the Kona Reef is going to sell itself as a Hotel, it needs to impress a certain minimum quality on the people who own the condos as a bad condo reflects badly on the whole place. Cameron, the manager, seemed to be a truly committed, hard-working guy and Castle Resorts should be thankful they have him. But other than that, some QC needs to be laid in on this site.

Had a wonderful time here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/04/06
We worried a little after reading some of the negative reviews on this site but since we had already booked our condo, we went ahead as planned. It was super! The condo we stayed in (D-3) is literally 30 feet from the ocean! We loved sitting on the lanai (patio), having our breakfast, and watching the surfers and the cruise ships. Our condo was fully furnished with a full kitchen, washer/dryer, coolers, beach towels, etc. We learned that all the units are individually owned so that is reflected in what experience people have in their condo. We also learned that people who buy package deals often get put in the "B" building and that's the one, I guess, that others found noisy. That certainly isn't true of the "D" building -- It's made of concrete so you don't hear your neighbors and all you hear is the ocean. We will definitely be going back!

Showing it age, needs clean up.
By LynnA, 06/10/06
We had stayed here before many years ago and it was very nice. However on this stay the carpet in our room was very stained, my daughter and another girl cut her foot on the pool deck, the air cond. unit in my mother's room had no remote and you had to climb up on a chair. The pull out sofa had no sheets. The rugs in the hallway need replacing. It is quickly becoming a dump. The only good thing is the view from the room if you like to sit on the deck and watch the waves. I will not book a room here again.

The Best
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/18/05
A short walk to town and resturants. The oceanfront condo, D-12, we stayed in was very clean and well appointed. It felt like home. We will stay there again on our next trip to Kona.
