This is my hotel in Maui
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/11
My most recent visit was the fifth time I stayed at Ka'anapali Beach Hotel (KBH). Each time I stay, my wife and I try to do new things - both at the hotel and on Maui. The hotel offers many activities, most of them included in the cost of the room. These are generally Hawaii-oriented activities, such as lei making, ukulele lessons, nature walk, etc. My wife and I have done most and find them educational and fun. Many activities geared towards kids, too. The hotel also helps with setting up activities throughout Maui and the employees do not make a commission. It's nice to know I'm not being pressed towards taking a specific company for outside activities. Everything they've recommended so far has been great!
The hotel is older than most and shows some age. During my last visit, I noticed a great deal of updating to rooms. I was also told the lobby was scheduled for an overhaul this year. All are welcome upgrades. One must realize that the rooms at this hotel are 2/3 or even 1/2 the price of rooms at adjacent hotels. Still, the rooms are clean and comfortable with plenty of room. The grounds are maticulously cleaned every morning. The pool looks nice and is away from the beach and sidewalk, giving it some privacy. The restaurant has very good food, but the Tiki Bar's food is basically fast food.
What makes this hotel different is not the physical amenities, but the staff. They are friendly and courteous. I've stay on the four "major" islands - most many times - and these employees are the best I've come in contact with. Malihini and Mikala, at the guest desk, are expecially helpful and great to get to know.
I've read other reviews on this site and find most are spot on. Like any hotel, this one is not perfect. That said, I haven't found another that I'd rather stay on in Maui. The location is about the best you can get on Ka'anapali Beach. It's more private than most other hotels and the beach is adjacent to the grounds. Several restaurants and dozens of shops are in short walking distance (a couple minutes) at Whaler's Village. Lahaina is a short, 2-mile drive with tons of shopping, food and even some office stores, if you're going to Maui with some work in mind. Kapalua, is close for exceptional golf and dining, although there are golf courses across the street from KBH that are always full of golfers.
If you're going to be pampered on-site, want spas and to be treated like a movie star, go to Grand Wailea or up to Kapalua. You'll pay $500 to $1500+ per night, but you'll likely be happier. Want brand-new rooms and a sparkling environment, stay at the Sheraton or Merriot on the beach. They'll cost you $100 or $200 more per night, but you'll be happier. I stay at KBH because I love the staff and location. I find the rooms to be comfortable and clean. The "Hawaiian" experience is great and it's the best hotel deal around. Enjoy your trip!
