Definitely pass this one up
My wife booked us at this hotel for four nights for our trip to Savannah, because the price was really good. We didn't even stay the first night. I had read several other reviews online that the hotel was in a bad area, and others had seen lots of seedy characters in and out of the hotel. Because of the price, we were willing to give it a try. I can personally vouch for every bad review I read about this hotel. Garden City is actually the primary industrial district of Savannah. Dumptrucks, tractor trailers, and 'working class' people are all the norm in this area. I did not feel safe even pulling in the parkinglot. We walked into the lobby, and there was an extremely foul smell (marijuana perhaps?) in the air. My wife commented that there was a man walking out of the hotel lobby half drunk with an open beer in one hand and two pizza's in the other. Family oriented, I think not.
The desk clerk was on the phone the entire time we were checking in talking with one of her girlfriends about how noxema really cleared up her skin. She gave us our room keys and we decided we wanted to look at the room before deciding for certain if we wanted to stay. The hotel is DEFINITELY dated, and the smell from the lobby permeated most of the rest of the hotel. Sure enough, we walked in our room, and got a double, not the king room we had reservations for. My wife called the front desk, and they said they were overbooked as it was, and she doubted seriously that a king room would be available at all for the weekend. My wife requested a manager, and was told the manager was gone for the day, yet this was on a Thursday afternoon, at about 3pm. We called the online travel site we booked through and they told us at minimum we were out one night's stay and would have to cancel reservations through the hotel. They were less than helpful to say the least. My wife made a few calls, and we found a great hotel on Tybee Island right on the beach, although it cost almost 3 times more. After the rotten service and horrible neighborhood at the Master's Inn Garden City, we were more than happy to pay extra for a much better hotel. About 20 minutes later, we returned our keys to the desk clerk, checked out, and cancelled the reservation. Because we actually had two separate reservations (one for Thursday night, and one for Fri-Sun nights) we wound up losing $54 for Thursday, and $61 for the Fri-Sun reservations. On Friday I requested to speak with a manager regarding some sort of refund because the hotel was completely misrepresented on their website, and because we were so upset we didn't even want to stay there, and the manager refused, stating I should have read the fine print when we made the reservations.
To sum up, this hotel is in a very heavily industrial area, located right next to a no-name gas station, has very difficult access to the parking areas, has a trucker-parking area in back, has a green slime pool, very foul odors throughout the hotel, less than helpful staff, and all told, I felt very uneasy and feared for my and my wife's safety the entire time (daylight) that we were in the area. I would highly recommend that if you are considering this hotel because of the price, you reconsider. There are plenty of other hotels in the area that cost just a little bit more for ALOT better service and satisfaction.
