Coral Reef Beach Resort
The Coral Reef Beach Resort is located directly on the Gulf of Mexico on St. Petersburg beach. Our resort offers everything for an active, yet relaxing vacation. Swim in the gulf or in one of the state*s largest free form pools, play golf and tennis nearby, then see the sights of the Tampa Bay area. After a full day, walk along the beach and enjoy a beautiful gulf sunset. Coral Reef Resort offers a vacation getaway as active or as relaxing as you choose to make it.
I am writing this review while staying at Coral Reef - they have WiFi now. Our condo was just redone and has brand new tile (NICE tile - not the usual cheapo stuff in hotel rooms), new kitchens and baths, with GRANITE. Very tasteful furniture. They rent by the week or night and some people own timeshare here.
I was hesitant to check-in, the building in front of the beachfront buildings is closed and the property looks abandoned from the street. But the condo buildings are completely open. There are multiple pools and hot tubs and the sand is steps away. We attended a "sangria party" and "ice cream social", they had some other events during the week as well.
There is no onsite dining, which may be a dissapointment to some. We like to cook, so we have taken advantage of our kitchen every night but one. The restaurant (Bongos) at Coral Reef is closed, but the Tradewinds is next door and they have a bunch of restaurants. The Alden is on the other side and I saw a tiki bar out back, so food and drink are just a short walk in either direction.
The staff was friendly. Over all we are very pleased with our stay and would stay here again.
We love Coral Reef. The staff will do anything to help you and the maintenance crew is very efficient. We own four weeks there and go back every year. The hotel in front on the streetside has been purchased and hopefully will soon be torn down. Rooms have new furniture and the kitchens are being remodeled. The bathrooms have been remodeled with beautiful granite and tile. If you have not been there lately, please go check it out. Enjoy the beach, the friendly people, the nice heated pool, and the great gulf view.
When we arrived, it was dark and the front looked deserted, we happen to notice the small sign that said come to the side entrance for the office. Once I finally found the office it was in a mobile home, their was no one in the office so I had to call the security number that was on the front door. The security officer didn't know anything about our reservation that was made approx 3 hrs prior to our arrival. The security guard called the office manager who also in return didn't anything about us checking in. Our reservations were made through RCI. We were given a room and told we would have straighten things out in the morning. I took the key and checked out the room before unloading. The room was very outdated and old. The sofa looked dirty. There was so much construction going on, it was very hard to a good place to walk. The walkways were dark and it made me very uncomfortable in a place that I was not familiar with. We took this opportunity to refuse the room and recieved a full refund. I was extremely disappointed and will never return to this location.
We stayed here the first week of June and were worried when we first drove up, as it looked like a desserted place. I will say the place is a bit old but with the new changes to come it will be better when we return. The staff is exstreamly friendly and service is great. We had an ocean view on the top floor (6th) and we had the most beutiful sunsets you can imagine. People would line up at sunset on the beach we just steped onto the balcony. The kitchen is fully equiped and there are grocery stores (multiple large chain) within walking distance. If you dont like to cook while on Vacation there are enough restraunts for you to try a different one every day for atleast 2 weeks and they are all very friendly. The beach is 100 yards from the resort and much to my surprise the sand is never to hot to walk on barefoot. The gulf water was nice and clear, which too surprised me. The best thing of all was the pools. I have 2 little girls (3 & 5) and they were in the pool morning, noon & night. it has rock formations and waterfalls in the middle. A bridge you can swim under and best of all capacity for well over 200 people. The worst thing on this trip was learning that it all had to end. Wish I could of stayed a few weeks more but there is always next time. Hope this was helpful to you.
We were there in Sep 08 and they were in the process of updating all the units. They had painted and replaced the drapes and are in the process of redoing the bathrooms, replacing the floor tiles, replacing the furniture and updating the kitchen. I saw some of the completed units and can't wait to go back next year. I was told they should be completed by the end of the year. The empty hotel does look dumpy but I don't mind because of the privacy we got. The beach is the best around. Unfortunately they are not going to do anything about the internet service, they said that they have gotten bids and it was too expensive. Besides we are there on vacation and we should be leaving that stuff behind. They also said that the plans for what to do with the hotel has been approved so we can kiss our nice pool goodbye since some of it is on their property. That is why I am not in a hurry for them to start building the new resort. We will be back to all that construction again. You think parking is bad now and there goes what little view we have.
I love the gulf side location. This is not a premium resort and they never tried to be, but it does offer a great place for vacation. There has been construction ongoing. The bad part is that the motel street side has different owners and it has been closed awaiting sale and remodeling or new construction. When this happens, this will make Coral Reef Beach Resort a much better and valuable resort. We have stayed at the condo's and previously the motel for over 10 years(last stay 12/25/07, next stay over new years eve 08/09)
This hotel probably has the potential to become a 'resort' at some point in the future, but right now, the spectacular pool design is by far the best amenity this place has to offer. I'm not sure how some folks gave it 5 stars, unless you've never been to a true resort to have a better frame of reference. If you are making last minute vacation plans as we were sometimes you can't be too picky, but we wouldn't go back to this hotel even for a last minute vacation.
To check in, you have to follow the signs to find the office, since apparently due to the remodeling it is not located at the front of the hotel as you would typically expect. The office is not open 24 hours a day like in a standard resort, so if your key card gets deactivated at 11:00 at night like ours did and you can't get into your room, you have to call security in order for them to unlock the office and get you a working card. Not very customer-service oriented in my opinion. There is a drive up circle where you can park your vehicle and unload your luggage directly in front of the elevator, which was nice for checking in and out. However, the luggage carts were rusting away and very unstable. The elevator was extremely slow and very hot and stuffy.
Our room on the 6th floor had a nice oceanside view, but because there is only one small elevator for the entire hotel and the entry doors to the rooms are on the outside of the building, private balconies are not an option. It was a little strange to be sitting out on the balcony trying to enjoy the view with people constantly walking by.
Our room, while small, was clean and relatively well maintained. The folding door which separated the living room from the bedroom fell off its hinges the first time we tried to close it. Maintenance promptly came to fix the door, but apparently those doors coming unhinged is a common occurrence because we saw them carrying folding doors from several other rooms as well. The furniture was very outdated which can be easily overlooked, but the cushions had large stains on them (yuck) which weren't so easy to overlook. They made you want to put a towel or sheet over them before you sat down. They need to invest in some new furniture or get the ones they have professionally cleaned.
There were no DVD players or VCRs available in the room, but you could rent one for an extra charge. There is also no high-speed internet connection, only-dial up. They did offer wireless if you were by the pool, but they need to offer it for the entire hotel.
The location of the hotel is nice since you can walk directly out the back and onto the beach. There is also convenient access to the supermarket, gas stations and shops.
This hotel had only a handful of planned activities for guests to do (ice-cream party, pizza party) and those were only once a day, unlike other resorts that have activities planned by the hour. Although the pool had a fabulous set up and a small cabana right in the middle, there was no live entertainment any day of the week (not even for the holiday weekend), and no pool-side bar for refreshments. And although you could swim the entire length of the pool, pool chairs were only available on one half of the pool area. So if you wanted to sit at the far end of the pool and catch some sun, or use the hot tub at that end you would have to drag a lounge chair with you. There was also no small wading pool for little kids, so unless your child is over 3 1/2 feet tall, they won't be able to hang out and splash around in the pool by themselves.
Except for the pool set up, I would not recommend this hotel as a place to stay at while in St. Pete's. They have a lot of work left to do in order to really be considered as a resort destination. Go anywhere else and you'll probably be happier with your overall accommodations.
