Snooty \"I'm Sorry\"
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/9/07
My husband and I decided to take my parents to the Mayflower Inn for a nice lunch on a beautiful fall day. I had called earlier in the afternoon and spoke to an employee on the phone and told her that we would be a party of five in the tap room. She said no problem and that the restaurant was usually not busy at that time and there was no need for a reservation. So, we proceeded to take the 1:45 minute ride to the Inn.
Upon our arrival, we walked into the tap room. It was not busy and we were approaced by a waiter that said he was going to get our table ready. Two seconds later, a female waitress comes over and asks if we were hotel guests. I said no and that we just wanted lunch. She then tells us that they only serve hotel guests before 6pm???!! It was 3:45pm. Why didn't they tell me that on the phone, why was the other waiter getting us a table?? Why isn't that policy even posted on the internet web site?
When I mentioned that I called and that the policy is not posted ANYWHERE she just gave me a vacant "I'm sorry". She must have said "I'm Sorry" in that apathetic, rude tone to me about five times. I realized that there was no negotiation and that she really didn't want us to be there and didn't care about us. (For what ever reason).
On the way out the we spoke to the general manager about the situation. He gave us the same vacant "I'm sorry" and kept walking.
It was so embarassing and insulting! We certainly were not dressed or behaving inappropriately in any way. We just came there for a nice afternoon. Besides, we have a family reunion every year in which we normally take a cruise (there is 25 of us!) and this year we thought that maybe the Mayflower Inn was an option for a change of pace. I'll think I'll have to keep looking...
