Built in 1916, this hotel is situated in a pine forest at the gateway to Big Sur and has hosted many celebrities, including John Travolta, Tony Bennett and Oprah Winfrey. The rooms are top-notch, with subdued lighting and breathtaking views of the ocean. Especially gorgeous is the view from the restaurant, where you can listen to jazz while gazing out over the waves below. Upon entering the atrium-style lobby with its polished wooden columns and dark blue glass, you will be at home away from home.

Luxury, comfort and view!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/24/09
Wonderfully comfortable and luxurious bed & layout and fantastic view from spa suite. Nice full kitchen. Fantastic and convenient bath. Perfect place for senior but mobile couples to relax in and have as a base for exploring the Carmel & Big Sur areas.

Not worth the price!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/01/09
We stayed here one night for a wedding and were charged almost $600! The room was worn and flooring creaked and we heard our upstairs neighbors walking across the floor a lot. The Highlands Inn needs updating.

Carmel's hidden secret
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/21/09
Friendly service from the check-in staff to Sam the bellman. A beautiful property with amazing views. Nestled in the foothills overlooking the Pacific. Hat’s to the resort manager for the first class service and amenities.

A Dream
This place is stunning. My wife and I stayed there for a weekend with some friends. It was one of the best experiences we've ever had. The area is beautful, the view of the ocean is breathtaking and the rooms were excellent. And the drive down from San Francisco was wonderful. We keep looking for excuses to return.

Just amazing!
By JamesG, 10/08/08
The view from our room was absolutely breathtaking! The service was impeccable: we were greeted with bottles of wine, water, and a letter from the general manager. The staff was very professional and the room was kept perfectly clean. When we had a problem drawing the window shades, the miantenance staff was at the room fixing it in a matter of 5 minutes. I definitely recommend this hotel for any occasion, from special celebrations to family vacations. It will be memorable forever...

Disappointing...
By Susan ES, 08/22/08
We recently completed a three night stay at the Highlands Inn. Need less to say I was quite disappointed. The grounds are nice and the staff was helpful, but the rooms are terrible. Felt like we were staying in a shoe box. They are so small, old, and poorly designed. We had an Ocean View King and there was no where to sit but on the bed or outside on the deck. The veiw was nice, but not sure the price and constant loud Highway 1 noise justified the price. I would be hard pressed to call this a 4 to 5 star resort, maybe at one point, but not any longer. The prices should be more like $200 considering what you get. Not sure we will be going back any time soon unless the prices come down, a lot!

Disappointed w/ room
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/20/08
We booked the room for a special occasion and planned on staying two nights. We figured even if the weather was poor we could enjoy our lovely room. We had seen website pictures and heard wonderful stories of the spacious rooms with jacuzzi tubs. Well, apparently the rooms we'd seen and heard about have been sold as timeshares. The rooms available are much smaller and more along the lines of a Comfort Inn, for which we never would have paid these rates. (We stayed in an Ocean View King.) The decor is a mixture of old and remodel (i.e. granite counters in the bathroom, but old banged up woodwork and sun bleached carpet). We ended up canceling our second night, and only staying the first because we had dinner reservations nearby and didn't want to ruin a special occasion altogether. The grounds and ocean views are beautiful. The service is top notch. If you go with lower expectations than ours in terms of the room itself and spend this much for lodging regularly, you'll probably be happy here.

Overpriced & Overrated!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/20/07
This has to be one of the WORST 4-5 star hotels where we have ever stayed. The rooms are outdated, ugly, and dirty. The staff is unresponsiveness and unattentive to basic needs (such as getting water). Room service is only available from 8-10 and there is no place around to obtain basic supplies (such as food). The food that we did get was just horrible. All this for a mere $600 per night (use your money wisely and stay in pebble beach instead for the same price and 100X the experience).

Nice but be careful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/21/07
Made reservations 6 months in advance and when we arrived we were given possibly the worst garden level room on the property. Had a great view of the walking path where people went to smoke and the parking lot beyond that. If you were careful and stood on a chair you could catch a glimpse of what looked like the ocean. We were told that since we hadn't requested a view room we were given what was left, dah, who would go to Carmel for a room with a view of the parking lot! Talked to management and after a very firm discussion with the site manager about our dissappointment, she helped us the following day by giving us a much better room with a view and much more privacy. Although now we had a colony of little black ants that liked our room too. I was bit while sitting on the living room couch. Service was very good at the restaurant, and the food/wine selection was second to none. If you visit, I would be very careful in your requests and reservations, we would probably return, but not without several assurances that we would not get a parking lot view.

very poorly furnished and very unconfortable couches
By ana, 06/01/07
The grounds are spectacular, but on the other hand the rooms are very poorly decorated and very unconfortable stale sofas and furnishings. The smoking should be left for outdoors only, many luxury hotels and cruises are changing to smoking in open lounges. To many people are developing allergies from ciggarette ingredients left behind.
