Rex is slipping
By ,
We've stayed at the Rex many times, for the usual reasons: atmosphere, wine, location, staff, price. Our last visit found us in a room too small for two small people [had to lift the suitcase over the bed to get it into the room], on the street [therefore very noisy], too hot [and not 'coolable'], and relatively expensive [$450 for 2 nights]. The wine bar is still nice, but too much attention has gone into the public areas. If the rooms were really $150, they would be almost reasonable.

Not likely to return
By ,
We stayed at the Hotel Rex for two nights. The room was TINY! There was barely enough room to walk. No chairs - just a bed, dresser, a night stand and another table. TV was all of 14 inches. Working was uncomfortable to say the least. It was the hottest day of the year so far and there is NO Air Conditioning (just an oscillating fan). On the Good side... It was in a very convenient location (close to the Financial District. There was free Wifi access everywhere in the hotel. The staff was courteous and offered very nice dining suggestions.

wonderful san francisco experience
By ,
rooms were small but clean. the service was excellent and we were in the heart of downtown, just down the street from the cable cars and a couple of blocks from union square. Will definitely be staying here again!!!

Lacking Customer Service
By ,
After flying 6 hours and taking a $55. cab ride from the airport to the hotel. The last thing i wanted was to carry 90lbs of luggage up 3 flights of stairs because the hotels' elevator is out. I expected the hotel to have someone who would carry its guests bags up and down those stairs. The resturant in the hotel was great along with the wine tasting. however, the lack of guest accomidation killed this hotel for me and i would never consider staying there again. ( my back cant take it!)

Our home in San Francisco
By ,
If you are looking for a home away from home in San Francisco, look no further than the Rex. The hotel is comfortable and the staff informal but extremely helpful. There was not one hotel staff member who did not greet us in a friendly manner at any time during our eight day stay. Our room was not huge, but we didn't feel cramped and it was very quiet. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was modern and well appointed. I enjoyed the decor, particularly in the lobby. We also enjoyed many meals at the Cafe Andree, which offers a number of different dishes at a range of prices. We particularly enjoyed the evening we tried the tasting menu. The wine hour was a very nice touch and would allow single people to get to know other folks staying in the hotel. The place is comfortable and homey without being cutesy or frilly. I thought the location very good, being only steps away from a cable car line and a reasonable walk from BART and the many bus lines on Market. I will always have very warm memories of the Rex and will definitely stay there any time I am in San Francisco.

We'll never stay anywhere else!
By ,
Loved, loved, loved Hotel Rex! Not like your home away from home, much better! The staff was friendly and helpful. They made great suggestions for dinner each night (places we would never have found on our own), offered free wine in their trendy bar each night, and even gave us complimentary tickets to the San Fran Museum of Modern Art. The room was small, but cozy and had great ammenities, like Cotton robes, a make up mirror, aveda products, and high speed internet. My husband and I were so pleased with our experience that we will never stay anywhere else.

Great Stay
By ,
The Hotel Rex was an excellent place to stay in San Francisco. Their rooms were lovely, and they had a nice bar/lounge area which was quite comfortable. They also had a restaurant with creative and tasty items to choose from. Even better, it wasn't terribly expensive (compared to the other restaurants which were around. There was a slight mix-up, as I tried to upgrade my room after reserving it, and the hotel was unwilling to take my credit card to guarantee the upgrade. When I showed up, I was told that I would not be given the upgrade. However, they did provide us with a reasonable alternative (a slightly larger room with a roll-away bed for free). Overall, it worked out fine, and was in a great location for the conference I attended.

Rex for the Romantic Weekend
By ,
The Hotel Rex is a small hotel 1 1/2 blocks from Union Square. We loved the cozy atmosphere. While the the hotel is loacted very near major shopping, club, and theater loactions it is far enough away to be quiet. We spent the weekend in SF with a group of friends that stayed at a trendier looking, but really noisy hotel. Our island of calm after clubbing was wonderful. The staff was right on top of everything we needed -- something I'm not used to with smaller hotels. The room was a bit small but the cd player and provided jazz soundtrack was great. Next time I'll bring my own soundtrack. High treadcount linens and comforter greatly pleased my companion. We were within walking distance of a couple of good clubs and some hot bars so our cab fares were low. Garage parking was close by and much less expensive than we expected. We were envied by our friends. We'll go back.
