Known as the site of two San Francisco hot spots, the Red Room Bar and the Titanic Cafe, this multistory hotel features a beautiful, high domed lobby in an Art Deco style and is filled with bright colors and a festive, urban atmosphere. Well appointed guest rooms are available that are filled with an array of modern amenities sure to please the most discerning traveler.
The view wasn't that great from our room. But it was cozy at night though. The service was okay too. There wasn't a pool, which they could've had. The lobby was small. But I had fun staying there it was a new experience.
Had a room on the 6th floor facing an alley so the street noise was kept to a reasonable level. The room came with coffee maker, mini fridge, free highspeed cable, t.v...and Aveda bath products. Had to put a damp towel over the radiator heater to "regulate" the heat (also had window open). Interesting colorful lobby in Art deco motif- unique older hotel with friendly staff and hard working cleaning staff (I usually tip the cleaning staff.)
Pluses: location...Union Hill, theatre district, comfortable room w/amenities. Good price overall.
Needs improvement: can't do much about the sound issues (thin walls). I didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel room ..but I always bring earplugs !
Hotel Commodore offered us a large room with a king size Serta hotel quality bed (could be higher quality bed). The room had a walk in closet with a small refrigerator.
The bathroom was a bit of a disappointment. Very low water pressure in the shower. The sink was cracked in multiple places. The shower surround was imitation tile.
Free wireless internet worked flawlessly.
The single elevator was small, noisy, and very slow. Given that our room was directly next to the elevator shaft, I was aware of every guest's entering and leaving the hotel.
Walking distance to Union Square and Polk Street (our legs hurt a bit). Red Room Bar (in the same building) a bit of a pricey dive...
my boyfiend took me here on my birthday as a surprise....I loved it. The decor is colorful, staff friendly, and it was clean and quaint. I love the lack of cookie cutter image, definately has personality and style..... we are going back for his birthday next month.
Stay at The Commodore if you like a fun, unique, colorful hotel. It's a fun place and a great value, but it isn't uber-posh at all. It's a San Francisco hotel with character, located a few blocks above the semi-gritty Tenderloin neighborhood. It's a short walk to Union Square.
I love the modern-deco style of the colorful lobby. And the rooms are decent, though certainly not luxurious. But the price isn't too high either.
If you stay at The Commodore be sure to eat breakfast at the tiny Titanic cafe attached to the lobby. The omelette with goat cheese apples and carmelized onions is amazing! And The Red Room, the bar downstairs is not too bad either. Can be a fun crowd. So, I recommend this hotel for travellers who are looking for an interesting place to stay. And, you like this colorful design style in the lobby, you might also want to consider the Triton Hotel.
