Great location, Nice staff, but a few cons
By ,
Pros: Lodge is located in the state park. Walking distance from cabin to several hiking trails. (Pfeffer Falls/View is just a skip away. Worth the hike, but not for those with knee problems.) Staying at the lodge offers free admission to all the state park in the local vicinity. Cottages nestled in the redwoods High vaulted ceilings with a Skylight above the foot of the bed. Moderately clean rooms (a bit dusty) Rooms with the kitchen was stocked with pot/pans/dishes/utensils/ clean working stove/refrigerator/ small table with window view at pool. I had a room with a vanity area, large size closets to put clothes in. Coffeemaker with tea/coffee Outdoor pool, didn't use it Friendly informed staff semi private front deck with view of pool to relax at. 1 free reserved parking spot by cabin. Cons: First thing I noticed was the smell of old wood in the room. Similar to the smell of old books/ furniture. Unpleasant, but bearable. Cold at night (went in late July). We tried the fireplace and it got smoky in the room. Good heat by the fire, but it didn't warm the room up (high ceilings didn't help. The down blankets were flat thin. The heater in the room can't be used with fireplace. It takes a while to heat up the whole place to a comfortable level. If you come in winter, be prepare for a very cold night. No TV (didn't miss it) No Wifi (would have been nice) Pricey room $300+ for two queen bed room/kitchenette. Summary. I would look for lodging elsewhere. Old smell / dusty ledges/ old single pane windows, makes me think twiced.

Never go back again !
By ,
$300 the room. No TV, no radio, no Wifi, no HVAC, no hair dryer, not even a working electrical heater in the room (they replace the broken one by another not working well one). 50°F in the room at night and a smoking fireplace. Enough wood for only one hour of heat. After that you have to buy more wood. The only working heater in the room was gaz heater at 1 yard to the master bed. Did they ever hear about carbon monoxyde ? It's the most expensive hotel we stayed in during our 15 days trip thru California and it's surely the worst. Even travelodge and motel 6 at $80 the night were better. I can understand the choice of no TV, no radio... but why they don't put books in the room ? About the restaurant and the food : expensive, just good enough. If you visit the amazing Big Sur, don't go to this place.

Great place with wheelchair access in some units
By ,
My wife and I enjoyed two nights at Big Sur Lodge at Pfeiffer Beach State Park, though it was bitterly cold in the room at night. The firewood wood not light - I was a boy scout but absolutely could not light it - I think it had gotten wet and had frozen water in it. Both nights we survived until daybreak by God's grace. The area is beautiful with redwoods and oak trees and a short trail to the most beautiful waterfall in California. The rooms are grouped into fourplexes with a stone fireplace in our unit, large room with a nice little wooden deck out the back built a few feet off the ground. We loved the black-hooded Stellar Jays, and the noisy and arrogant ravens!. The Jays will come right up to you and want croissant crumbs. There was wheelchair access and an accessible wheelchair trail, though it was not maintained -- they had let it get overgrown so badly, no one there even knew where it was! I was there years ago for a disability conference and wanted to go back, and will again -- next time with my own firewood!

Loved the area, room was okay
By ,
We spent a week at the lodge and loved the area. The room was a little old but clean. We thought the restaurant food was pretty good and the service was good. We had horrible service at the ice cream counter each time we tried to get ice cream. The manager did not respond to our concerns. We will probably stay at a different place on our next visit.

Sleepless in Big Sur
By ,
My wife and I had planned a quiet respite in the beautiful Big Sur wilderness. Instead of making reservations, we decided to just drive down and stay in the first place that caught our fancy. The Big Sur Lodge in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park seemed to be just what we were looking for so we checked the front desk for availability. We were pleased to find that they had a fireplace room available. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out to be as they appeared. Our cabin was substandard for the 1950's, but we decided that we would stay and enjoy the beautiful park. That evening when we started to turn the heater on we found a note warning us not to use both the heater and the firepace because of a potential carbon monoxide danger. OK, we thought we'll use the fireplace. But the fireplace smoked so badly that it ran us out. That night we nearly froze. We tried to contact the General Manager the next to to express our concerns, but were continually rebuffed - being told that he was inavailable. Needless to say we will not stay at this hotel again!

A wonderful moutain retreat!
By ,
My mother and I came to Big Sur with reservations in a different hotel, and found it unsuitable, so we came to Big Sur Lodge. They had a room that ended up being a no-show, so we took it for the night. Although it was pricey, the room was beautiful and quite clean. Our room had a fireplace with a couch and table and chairs, along with a queen bed. There was a separate room with another queen bed. This room also had a wonderful skylight. This hotel is located in Big Sur Park in a heavily wooded area.. it has wonderful views of the mountains surrounding it. Overall, it was a great last-minute stay for us.

Very Disappointed
By ,
The 1950's style "cabins" are poorly furnished. The kitchen units lacked sufficient cooking/dining utensils. The fireplace smoked and caused the smoke detector to go off in the middle of the night. We called the Lodge for assistance, but got no answer. Both the food and service at the restaurant were substandard. When we tried to express our concerns to the General Manager we were offered a free lunch and told the he was busy.

Won't Go Back Again
By ,
The cabins are old and the amenities are limited, if not nonexistent. Both the food and service at the Lodge's restaurant were substandard. Kitchen rooms lack the basic utensils needed for cooking/dining. The fire place smoked. The heater after being relit several times during the day finally went out for good during the night leaving us to freeze in the typical 40+ degree Big Sur night. The store was out of milk and bread for several days. When we tried to discuss our concerns with the general manager we were offered a free lunch by the front desk clerk and told the the manager was busy.

A favorite place to stay
By ,
The Lodge is located in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park so hiking trails are close by(don't miss the short hike to the Falls). Redwoods and Oak trees are located throughout the lodging area. There's also a nice pool and a laundry. The 61 rooms are built in groups of 4's so that there's a lot of open space. Although they tend to be basic, the rooms are very comfortable. The extra cost for a fireplace is definitely worth it. Rooms with a deck are best -- with your morning coffee you'll see Blue Jays, squirrels, and deer. We've been going yearly to Big Sur for at least 15 years; and although we've stayed elsewhere, we always go back to the Lodge because of its beautiful location, convenience, and consistency.
