Description

The budget-minded traveling family might find the Maswik Lodge the perfect choice for their Grand Canyon stay. Located a quarter of a mile from the south rim, it features a two-storied motel and separate cabins. Each room has a shower and telephone. All rooms at the lodge are motel-style rooms with two queen beds, a full bath, telephone, and television. Room sizes vary somewhat between the north and south sections of the lodge. North section rooms are a little more spacious than those in the south section. The cafeteria, which features a wide array of ethnic foods, is open from 6a to 9p daily. The lodge is named for a Hopi Kachina, who legend says guards the Grand Canyon.

Decent rooms, no frills
By a patron, 12/20/11
For the price, the room was sufficient. It was clean and had comfortable beds. The elevator can barely fit 3 people and suitcases and could use some maintenance, but stairs are there too. Last inspection on the elevator was 2006. There was no wifi available in the rooms here which I thought was very odd. We called the front desk and were told that we could go down to the lobby in the El Tovar if we wanted wifi. The toilet was connected to the toilet in the next room and if two people were sitting there was a seesaw effect. There was a very nice TV, a mini fridge, and sufficient drapery to block the sun. The staff at the El Tovar was not excessively pleasant, but the restaurant there had delicious food. We very much enjoyed our dinner which was a little pricey but very worth it. They offer some very delicious dessert options as well.

Not pleased with staff
By Joanna, 11/12/08
We had to wait to check in our room as we watch others check in? Our room was not ready and had to wait an hour to check in. No lobby to sit in. Staff was not accommodating until I went up and said that a person in our group had a cane. Very cold and impersonal. Room was ok but not for the price. I would suggest the EL TOVAR or the Bright Angel lodge.

Would try something else
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/12/08
The front lobby staff were never pleasant. There was always large piles of garbage outside of the lodges that were not picked up my house keeping. The food was completely overpriced and not very good. We were hoping for a nicer experience. The lodges are set back from the canyon about a 10 min walk which we did like because it was well wooded and quiet. Next time would probably stay at a hotel in the near by town to save money.

Loved It
By LauraB, 10/24/07
Our room was easy to locate. We stayed on the north side. It was easy walking distance to the rim. We had a second floor room, it was quiet and everything worked. Our room was cleaned and ready for us when we returned in the evening. We have no compliants. We enjoyed every minute. The staff made us feel comfortable and were very friendly. Everything was very clean. We will definitely stay there again.

budget visit to g.canyon
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/3/07
Likes: price, cleanliness, convience, cafeteria. dislikes, none. We were there the last weekend in March.Be prepared for unpredictable weather. It went down in the 20s with blizzard like conditions, there were people in shorts and sandalls. Overall a great place.

Better than I expected
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/7/07
After reading several of the reviews for this hotel, I thought I knew exactly what I was in for. This hotel exceeded my expectations. My room was very spacious with an extremely large vanity area. I asked for the second floor room as a result of many of the posts found here, and I got what I wanted. I was delighted to find my bathroom had been completely remodeled with new fixtures and brand new tile. It was beautiful. We did have a refrigerator in the room as well as air conditioning. The only noise aspect was that of guests leaving in the morning. The first shuttle leaves from the front of the hotel at 4:15 a.m., but it's a quick walk to the rim (and well lit)for those that want to sneak off for sunrise photos. I have recommended this hotel to all of my friends and would definitely stay here again.

Clean and recently remodeled
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/21/07
My room was very clean and nice. It had a hair dryer and refrigerator. Slept like a baby! The map I received to find my room was not to scale and we wondered all over the place for 20 minutes!!

Love the closeness to the rim
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/14/07
with out spending the extra $$ at the Tovar. We walked over to the rim for sunrise both mornings we were there! Clean and convient and although we were there in March, and not a lot of children around, it was very quiet. You can eat at the cafe or do as we did and enjoy a bite back in your room! I'd stay there again for sure!

Great Location-Poor amenities
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/22/07
The location can hardly be beat. The area is amazing. The hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. We stayed in November. We put the heat in the "comfortable zone" before we left to enjoy the sunset. We returned to a stifling hot room, even though the outside temperature was in the 30's. Even with frequentl lowering of the thermostat, we experienced a very warm night. The room is very "bare bones". Poor quality linens and furniture. The staff in the cafeteria were polite and helpful. The man at check in was impatient and rude. I would try for another hotel at the rim, if possible. If not, then I might stay here again because of the proximity to the canyon.
