Comfortable and Cosy
By Poppy, 9/19/11
The Inn is a very nice oasis in the middle of the cruise ship playground that's downtown Skagway. When you walk into the main property entrance, you're smack in the middle of a working kitchen garden, which I had to put off touring until we'd checked in, which was quick and painless. There were many lovely rooms, decorated in the 1800's style and named after various ladies of the evening. We had reserved the little room at the back (named "Ida") with a shared bathroom, which never presented any problem. The room was small but very comfortable and we both slept well. The only negative is something I'm kind of torn about: the view from the window was the large compost pile for the restaurant that's attached ("Olivia's", I believe). While it wasn't appetizing to look at in the least, I was happy that they were composting!! We just closed the curtains. We'd return.

A little bit of history in downtown Skagway! The rooms are furnished and decorated with the period in mind. The restaurant located downstairs utilizes produce grown on the grounds (which can be viewed from the restaurant). Tours are given of the garden. Some rooms have to use the shared showers at the end of the hall. This is not nearly as inconvenient as it sounds. Hey, this is Alaska -- be adventursome!

If you go to Skaway this place is a must.
By Joel, 8/13/06
It was so beautiful and we had such fun. If you can get Alices room do so and really enjoy the area and the people. Alice and Flo are the two largest rooms and are so comfortable and Alice has a balcony overlooking the town. Very nice.

Skagway Inn review

The Skagway Inn is a former brothel from the Gold Rush days. The rooms are named after the "ladies." The lower-priced rooms are small but comfortable. The more expensive rooms are beautiful. Especially Alice's room that overlooks Broadway, Skagways's main street. The Inn was clean and comfortable. It's location right on Broadway was a plus. We really enjoyed being able to walk to everything. We stayed there for a few nights. I was disappointed in the breakfasts. Everyday it was either a breakfast burrito or some kind of egg omlet. For those that don't care for either one, there was not much else but some kind of granola cereal or fruit. So we went out for breakfast every morning. Skagway is best enjoyed when there are too many cruise ships in town, so plan accordingly if you go. And beware, the town has over 20 jewelry stores to lure the cruise ship passengers. It certainly is not the same as when we visited in 1998. An absolute must see is the bronze sculpture garden on 8th St. The work is outstanding and it provides a welsome respite from the manic atmosphere when the ships are in. We took the state ferry in from Juneau. During our stay we rented a car and drove up the Klondike Highway. If you like to hike there is a nice flat trail along the water's edge on the western side of town. We saw easles fishing for salmon. The views are beautiful.
