Should be rated a 5 STAR
We stayed in the driftwood for a total of about seven nights on three different occasions on our ferry, flight and car trip to Alaska in the summer of 2006. I have to say that this is not the most modern hotel in Alaska and my biggest complaint is it does not have an elevator but I needed the exercise. It was a very clean, very roomy, very friendly and a very comfortable hotel. Just like home with a small kitchen and living room complete with eating table, chairs and couchs, etc.
The greatest thing was Driftwood's staff. They were courteous, kind, friendly and always helpful. While there, we went back and forth several times to the airport and ferry terminal, sometimes at odd hours, and they were always there to take us or pick us up even when we were the only two passengers to be picked up,etc. It was about fourteen miles to the terminals.
The location was also great, we could walk to almost everything-museum, downtown, water front, restaurants, tourist area at cruise ship terminal and especially to a nearby grocery store with a great deli. Saved a lot of $$'s as restaurant prices are high in Alaska.
Great things to do in the Juneau area--Day ferries to Sitka, Haynes,Skagway, Wrangell, Petersburg, etc. (with 1 to 4 night stay overs at each town); One way trip to or from Juneau and Skagway on Skagway Air Services' single engine planes over the Juneau Ice Fields, Lynn Canal and Mendenhall Glacier ($100-A Bargain); Boat trip to Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glacier on the Adventure Bound (great Capitan and crew and go out of their way to see all of the eagles, icebergs and whales etc that are possible to see); Mendenhall Glacier.
