they lost my ring and won't pay for it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/12/11
On December 15-18, 2010 we stayed at the Newport Beach Hotel & Suites. Two hours after checking out, on our way back to our home state of NJ, I realized I had left my ring in our room. I promptly called the hotel front desk and spoke with Emily whom, after checking with Housekeeping, said they did indeed have the ring in their possession. She requested and received my credit card information to ship the ring back to me immediately. I patiently waited two weeks but no one called and I did not receive anything in the mail. After 2 weeks, I called and inquired about the ring. Emily immediately referred me to Phil Fonte, general manager with no explanation. He stated this was the first he heard of the ring and informed me the hotel had lost the ring after logging it in their paperwork. He had no explanation as to what happened and informed me the hotel accepted responsibility as it was in their possession at the time of the loss. He stated the only thing he was prepared to do, with proper documentation of the ring's value, was refund our hotel stay but not address reparation of the value of the ring. We were unhappy with this reply so my husband emailed the heads of the Newport Hotel group. I then received a phone call from Phil Forte again requesting documentation of the ring's value before hotel negotiations would proceed. I faxed over a receipt of the ring's $900 value as well an appraisal provided by the seller. Phil Forte promptly called me stating since i rejected their offer of refund of our stay (less than half the ring's value) they are taking back that offer and not offering anything. I cannot express how extremely upsetting this whole situation is. We were hoping for a wonderful getaway in a family friendly town where businesses truly valued their customers. Instead, this has turned into a highly stressful situation with a business not offering any explanation or reparation for a customer's ring they admitted was in their possession. I cannot rule out the possibility of a crime being committed in that my ring has been stolen and the hotel management is not being cooperative.

Don't waste your money here.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/10
We are staying here right now and it isn't a good place to be. The noise from the street over shadows the sound of the ocean. Windows are small, bathroom is tiny, prices are vey high, front desk knows nothing about concierge service. Look elsewhere for a good stay.

Bait and switch
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/11/09
I reserved a room with queen beds 2 months in advance based on the Web site showing large room with whole wall windows. The web also shows you are in a beautiful beach setting. When i arrived we were told they no longer had queen bed room. The rom we got was small. The management said they would se what they could do and call me back in my room. They never did. The hotel in not on the back but across a busy road and the area has very heavy traffic. Way overpriced.

If you want room where you can hear the ocean...
By Beth H, 9/3/07
If you want room where you can hear the ocean, this is pretty much it (othet then Cliffside Inn which is $300+ per night). You may be able to find an expensive B&B on the water but this is the only place that I know of and I lived in Newport for 5+ years. You can find other places to stay that have a waterview but those are on the bay. The rooms are a little run down and the hotel is across the street but there is nothing ON any of the beaches in Newport of Middletown like you would expect in other towns. You can see and hear the ocean from the Inn At Newport Beach which is worth it for me. It takes about 5-10 mins to drive to downtown newport and if you don't plan to be in downtown newport every day, it is cheaper to park for the day than to pay parking fees to the downtown hotels.

The guest is always wrong!
By Daphne, 6/25/07
Because this hotel has nice beach views in some it its rooms, the management has the attitude that the location will sell itself. If anything goes wrong during your stay, be prepared for the manager to blame you. For example, if you don't like the spiders crawling all over your room, it's your problem. If you want your room serviced, be prepared to ask many times. The front desk staff is pleasant and apologetic, but if you take it to the actual manager of the hotel, you'll find that they just don't care. We were actually told at one point after asking multiple times to have our room cleaned that we could pack our things and go if we did not like having to wait all day for the housekeeping staff. We were also told that we did now know what it means to stay in a hotel . . .I've never had a staff be so anti-service oriented and present such a take-it or leave-it attitude. We, too, were offered some money off for our troubles, but at checkout, that offer had miraculously disappeared! Try another place in Middletown for much better service.

Not Worth The Money!!!
By Scott, 6/25/07
Looks nice on the outside, but really not worth what you pay for it. Its really gone downhill since the 90's. If you have any problems, expect arrogant and confrontational management instead of problem solving. In our weekend trip it took 4 requests, 6 hours and the manager lecturing us about how difficult it is to run a hotel just to get our room cleaned. After the argument, the General Manager promised to give us a discount, only at checkout time he claimed he never offered it??? One guest was complaining about calling ahead for a cot for her baby a day earlier, only to arrive and find they hadn't made the arrangements they promised. They had to get one from another hotel! Another guy had the old air conditioners in his room keep him up all night, only to have the staff tell him the engineer looked at it and it was fine. On vacation, you're looking to relax, and you can forget about that here. Too many problems, and you're better off staying at one of the newer places with good management across the street. They're not on the beach either, and have the same views.

Do not go ! this place was awful.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/28/06
The smell in the the halls and the room was terrible. We could not stay there, we found another place, Newport Hotel and Marina and it was within walking distance to everything and very nice. Don't stay at the Inn at Newport!

Terrible Experience
By LloydD, 9/25/06
We were awakened at 7:30 a.m. by sawing and hammering in the room immediately above us. They rented the room knowing this would happen. The desk clerk said we could only complain to the manager, who was out and did not return voicemails. The desk clerk ackowledged that other past and present guests had complained, to no avail. The room was small, had an unpleasant odor, and although advertised as an ocean view, the window was small and the beach distant, across a highway. There is no reason to stay here.

Left for Nicer hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/29/06
We were in complete dismay when we found the hotel. The website is completely deceiving. The pictures do not depict what we found. The smell of mold and mildew in the lobby and then the cover up spray smell in the rooms was deplorable. The woman at the front desk was the only positive thing about our short stay. She was very gracious when we stated that we wanted to leave and receive a complete refund. Good Luck on your improvements.

False Adversting
By robyn, 7/5/06
If you want to enjoy your trip to Newport, stay away from this hotel. We arrived expecting a quaint and charming hotel on the beach--the way it is described online and in its brochures. Well what a shock to see an old run down hotel, completely enclosed by scaffolding, with curtains flying out through open windows. Maybe in its "hey day" it was the place to be, but trust my word, you will not recognize the place from the ads when you get there. The hotel is also on the STREET, not the BEACH as it is described to be. I am still looking for the two chairs in the ad photos...As for the rooms, they are tiny (bed is almost out the window), front door didn't close in ours, very small shower stall which frankly, if you weigh more than 150 lbs you probably had a hard time maneuvering, and a sink that when you washed your face you hit your head on the wall. Ah yes, and our room phone didn't work. When you arrive for the free continental breafast, you have to pass through the old closed bar area. Very depressing. The staff was nice and friendly--clearly not their fault. Stay somewhere else unless and until they lower their prices to $50 a night....
