Spectacular and HO-HUM at the same time....
LOVED THE BEACH, OCEAN, POOLS....TOTALLY AMAZING...we swam @ midnight every day!! Water is so warm.... Loved that we could put our beach bags down and nothing was ever moved or missing...like money and cameras! The grounds were well kept, never any trash or debris. The staff was cheerful, friendly and always helpful--despite a language barrier they did their best to understand and accomodate.
Food was below average...first day it all looks wonderful, but when people in our party of 30 starting getting stomach cramps and diahrrea we began to scrutinize the food we ate, choosing that with the least risk. NO US standards here, we saw some cross contamination, raw chicken handled with tongs that were serving cooked food. You are instructed to not drink water from the tap, but we don't know what the ice or drinks are made of...eventually the tropical drinks or anything made with ice were bypassed for beer and wine...safer, no ice.
What you are NOT told: Bring cash because many credit cards will not work, most US banks will not allow you to use your check/visa card to get cash from a checking or savings account. Bring CASH because close to 99% of the little stores and markets do not accept credit cards. Bring CASH so if you are confronted with an unanticipated expenditure you can pay...such as you miss your transportation to the airport and need to hire a taxi. No cash big problem.
THINGS NO ONE BOTHERS TO TELL YOU TO TAKE ALONG: Extra Sun Screen--get the strongest possible, you'll need it the first few days, and bring several extra bottles otherwise you'll be paying $30-$40 US per bottle, also bring along zinc oxide or Noxema to totally block the sun if you get burned, otherwise you'll be inside until you heal; Pepto Bismol, Kaopectate, Imodium, Motrin, Tylenol, ear drops, bug spray, Benedryl liquid for bites, pills for allergies, some type of sunburn remedy--aloe, menthol, bandaids, bandages, ace bandage, antiseptic, neosporin--an assortment of normal household remedies--unavailable there and if available exhorbitantly expensive and possible fakes; for women a 2 piece bathing suit is far more practical than a 1 piece...you live in your bathing suit, wear it under beach dresses to breakfast, lunch and dinner!!! It is wise to bring atleast 2 bathing suits...3 isn't too many.
Clothes: Pack light--beach dresses, shorts, tshirts, flip flops, a dress or 2 for the disco/casino.....buy your beach wear at home...better prices, quality, style. For bathing suits....definitely bring with you, the selection is awful (strange for a beach resort) and prices sky high. Take a beach hat, baseball cap to keep the sun off your face and shoulders, beach bags that you don't care will get full of sand, ziplock bags to put electronics and things that might leak for the ride home. Bring your own washcloths...they don't have them!
Market: Never pay anything close to full price...start off 1/4-1/3 of price they want and stay tough....there is someone who will accept your price.
Tours: We didn't travel outside of the resort but those who did said it was very scary...there are no rules or laws, stopsigns, speed limits and they felt they were lucky to get back without being in an accident.
We had a great time....it was paradise, we would go back, but a little wiser. If we had kids with us, we'd take juice boxes and snacks for them. There is so much to do that time just whizzes by!
