Fantastic in virtually every respect
The Riu Palace Las Americas in Cancun, with some 400+ rooms/suites on eight floors, is one hotel/resort that exceeded our expectations in almost every way. Having been in Cozumel several times but never in Cancun, it took quite a bit of research figuring out where to stay so we'd have a balance of nice, luxurious hotel, good quality all-inclusive, nice beach, scuba diving, and being in the middle of things if we wanted to go for a walk.
We booked a flight/hotel combo and the Riu was surprisingly affordable, so we didn't know what to expect. Some reviews had described the Riu Palace as old and smelly, and the food as mediocre. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. The place is fantastic. The Riu is just six or so years old, and actually newer than the Riu Cancun next door, so don't let the spectacular classic architecture fool you.
The Riu Palace thrilled us from the minute we walked into its massive, grand lobby with all of its columns, marble, granite, stained glass, dark wood, and just sheer grandeur. Add a gorgeous view onto the Caribbean sea and it's probably one of the old-time great hotel lobbies anywhere.
Check-in was quick and we never really saw long lines despite the place being pretty much full. No credit card required, and Lola, our rep, gave us an awesome room on the 7th floor, with a full King bed.
When we got to the room, we were impressed with its size and decor. Very elegant with marble, granite, tile and wood. Stocked mini-bar, and liquor dispenser with four brand-name bottles (Tequila, Rum, Brandy, Vodka). And a view to die for. Over the infinity pool, beach, and the Caribbean. Less pleasant: the A/C was off and wouldn't come on, and the bags took quite a while to make it to our room. The A/C was just a fuse. The bed was a bit hard, but very acceptable. We slept well. Tons of towels. Great water pressure.
All-inclusive here means just that. All the food, all the drinks. Even room service (which we never used). The buffet restaurant, mostly indoors and a part outdoors, is elegant, with well-dressed waiters everywhere. Food for every taste, and plenty of it. Perhaps a tad bland to accommodate all tastes. And Americans expect more ice.
We could reserve for the five specialty restaurants two days in advance. The decor at the French (Krystal), Mexican (Tio Pepe), and Japanese restaurants was wonderful, and the food quite good. The steakhouse was outdoors and thus hot. Our favorite was the Brazilian place, where we went three times. Katerina at the reservation desk was a sweetheart and very helpful.
Yes, the beach is small, but very adequate. The main (infinity) pool was warm and gorgeous, the secondary one always had something going. The sand is white, very fine, and very clean. No bugs or mosquitos anywhere, which is very rare in the Caribbean. Drinks were brought to the pool (and everywhere else). Tips were appreciated, but not expected. Helpful, smiling, well-dressed staff was everywhere.
The Riu is in the middle of things, with several (tourist-oriented) shopping malls just across the street, though the almost constant hustling is annoying. Or hop on a bus for a buck.
We booked scuba diving through Scuba Caribe, which has a shop in the Riu Cancun next door. Divemaster Alberto was excellent, the diving better than expected with nice wrecks and colorful reefs with tons of fish, but the dive boats were rickedy and we never quite knew where we'd end up. We also booked a whale shark tour through Scorpio Divers and loved it.
Overall, the Riu Palace blew us away. It is a gorgeous, gorgeous place that is almost too good to be true. We'll certainly be back.
