My family just returned from three days and two nights at the Amish Country Inn in Shipshewana. I was concerned before we left because I read some of these reviews. I believe the people who wrote negative reviews must not have been at the same place we were! The Splash Universe/Amish Country Inn was a great place for our family! The kids loved the water park. The atmosphere was fun and the lifeguards were excellent! My wife is a lifeguard at our local YMCA and she noted that these lifeguards were constantly in motion and monitoring closely all of the activity in the pool area. Our son got a minor scratch on his foot and one of the lifeguards treated him in the First Aid station with excellence. The staff throughout the hotel were there to serve. The check-in and check-out experiences were uneventful - as they should be. The facilities were clean and well maintained. We needed maintenance in our room for a minor issue. After calling the front desk, a maintenance man was at the room within five minutes and the issue was quickly resolved. There is something for everyone in Shipshewana. We all loved the hotel/water park and Shipshewana and the Amish environment. It is well worth the trip and I am sure our family will be back again. Excellent experience!
Let's start with the prescription pill my two year-old niece swallowed, and not even the paramedics were helpful! Then there was the lithium battery that we dug out of the two-year old's mouth. My parents were across the hall and had toenail clippings and long black hairs all over! Yuk!!!! Hire a real cleaning staff! Not 19 year olds.
Went on New Years Eve- 2008. They did a really good job entertaining the children with magic shows and dancing. Staff was very accommodating and rooms were extremely clean. A couple suggestions to make this a perfect five-star. Need to make a pool devoted only for swimming and they would also benefit if they turned the creamery into a coffee shop in the morning. No place currently to get coffee.
Whomever hired the management for this place didn't know what they were doing. The staff is very under-trained. The website is very mis-leading. The waterpark is great for little kids, but adults...not so much. The water isn't more than waist deep in the deepest part of the pool. The hot tub never works. They hired a bunch of teenagers that don't give a crap. I feel sorry for anyone who wastes their time there. Restaurants like Blue Gate and Clearspring are over-priced. The food is "ok". If you want a good meal, I'd go to a less touristy town like LaGrange or Howe.
We had non-stop fun! Two days of water park with the overnight stay kept my 7 year old busy. The only time he came out of the water park was to go into the arcade room, attend chidrens activities, eat pizza and ice cream! I felt the water park was very safe; plenty of life guards (not goofing off) but doing their job. I could float in the lazy river or sit the hot tub without worry about my son's activities. The size of the park is allowed me to check on his location, which was on the lilli pad crossing or tube rides. Love the tubes that allow smaller children to ride with parent. Saturday activities kept us up until 11 pm. We stayed in the Family Fun Suite. Lot's of room, 3 tv's, bunk beds, AND a KING Bed for mom and dad; which was VERY comfortable. Room was very clean and cheerful. Country breakfast buffet filled us up, left plenty of time for the water park on our 2nd day. Love the NO-SMOKING, Family, Resort!!!! Definitely going back; and our friends with us have already re-booked!
I took my son to the waterpark in Shipshewana and he absolutely loved it! He went down the waterslides so many times that when it was time to go eat, he barely even argued--I think he was finally worn out! Anyone with a 7 yr old knows that is not the easiest thing to accomplish.
We had quiet time (just him and me) in a lovely resort suite (though we went with the cheapest). It was no worse than your average hotel -- although it was in a really great country "amish" theme.
I've seen some negative reviews, but what I noticed is that they were all during Spring Break and primarily revolved around how crowded it was and some comments about service. Gabe and I didn't have any problems whatsoever (course we didn't go during Spring Break)...it was much like going to Disney Land--guess what? there are lines. At least at Splash Universe they go quickly. As for service issues, we didn't have any. It was clean, a great deal of fun, and inexpensive -- more than any family could hope for.
When we were picking a place to spend a little time away with the kids over spring break Splash Universe was suggested. We didn't know anyone who had went but many had seen commercials so we checked out the web-site. We were shocked when we arrived. We arrived early to let the kids spend time at the waterpark before check-in. The "water park" is geared toward younger children. There is no place to swim, the life guards were rude and seemed to make up rules as the day went on (like you can't put your head under water!). The adult hot tub was back in a corner, secluded. When we got in, the seating area was rough. Later that night, we found we were covered in paint chips. The kids were ready to go to our room about an hour after we arrived! My children both left with injuries. When we were finally able to check in the room was a huge dissapointment. The semi private room was absoloutley not private at all when our child on the top bunk peeked over the half wall seperating our bed from theirs. The fact that there were two tv's in the room only meant that we had to compete over volume. We heard the people upstairs and the tv next door. We got no sleep. We bought a pizza package online and when we went to redeem it we were told they were out of all regular soda. The manager did work with us when I started getting a little testy. We also got an all you can eat breakfast the next morning. I ate fruit and cereal. If you enjoy your meat fresh aff the animal with that wild smell go for it. If not, bring cereal for your room. I do not reccomend this palce at all. Drive to Indy!
The water park was fun we spent 3 days playing there. By the time we left we were all so exhausted we could barely drive home! Our daughters (8 years old and 14 years old) both had a great time.
Unfortunately the Hotel and staff were another story. First of all I upgraded my room from an Adventure Quest Suite to a Family Fun Suite when our 14 year old daughter decided to come with us. I did this thinking that it would give the adults some privacy, and there would be an extra TV(for a total of three TV's). So that there wouldnt be any fighting over which show the kids were going to watch because a 14yo and an 8 yo dont watch the same shows. When we arrived in the room it was much smaller than expected! It was the size of a regular hotel room!! The living room area was too small for all of us to comfortably sit in together. The door to the bathroom rubbed against the toilet. There were also only 2 TV's the TV that was supposed to be in the kids area by the bunk beds was missing. We contacted the fromt desk and all they said was that the TV was broken and they dont have any more. There attitude was like "oh well!" So I spoke with a manager about it and after some time and explaining she said that she wold give us a discount. When I checked out and got my bill she gave us $10 discount!! WHAT!!! We also had problems connecting to the wireless internet, and once again I contacted the front desk, and once again the attitude was we dont know what to do about it, oh well! That wasnt good nough so again I contacted the manager and she said that she would send over someone to help. The persin that came to help did try, got us connected, but the connection would fade in and out every few minutes or so. The floor in the hallway between the bunk beds and the bathroom was getting wet. We hadnt spilled anything and the carpet was soaked. So once again I contaced the front desk and this time spoke to the manager right away. She said she would sent some one down to look at it. The same kid that came to fix the internet came down and looked then said "oh yeah they know about the problem it is the shower leaking from upstairs." Then he asked if we wanted a rug or mat to cover the wet carpet. It was as if we were just supposed to deal with it. No offer to change to another room, nothing. We were also uset that on easter sunday there was nowhere to eat. The dinning room at the hotel was closed and the entire town was closed. We had to end up eating burgers and fries from the snack counter at the water park. We wanted to have a nice sit down dinner as a family at a restaurant. I would visit the water park again and again it was so much fun for the whole family but the Hotel left something to be desired. OH yeah the free popcorn they advertise, what a joke!!! There was never any available to eat. I only saw them pop it once in three days and that was gone in seconds.
