Gentle green hills rise on each side of the river banks. In the north, the pilgrimage church of Mariahilf and in the south, the Veste Oberhaus look down over the town. The Old Town is situated on a narrow peninsula where the rivers Danube and Inn meet. The cathedral of St Stephan stands in the middle of the Old Town on a small hill. The cathedral organ with its 17,774 pipes and 233 registers, is the largest church organ in the world.Steep narrow lanes lead down to the rivers banks. Churches, museums, craft shops,small theatres, restaurants, pubs and discos exist here amid the Medieval town.Concerts, shows and cabaret are offered all year round not forgetting Die Europischen Wochen the towns summer music and arts festival.
