Yufuin Tamanoyu, Oita

Tamanoyu, is a traditional Japanese inn located in the hot-spring resort of Yufuin in central Oita Prefecture. Yufuin Onsen is an old medicinal hot spring that sits at the base of Mount Yufu. The area is famous for its efforts to preserve the past—not only historic buildings but also old traditions and lifestyles. Tamanoyu is part of that effort. The old inn has a thatched roof, winding wood-paneled corridors, sunken irori fireplaces in the main rooms, and a small garden. The guestrooms are smallish but elegant with beautiful shoji screens, tatami mats, Japanese toilet, sink, and futon tucked away in the closets. Tamanoyu has separate bathing facilities for men and women. The indoor baths are spacious pools made of hinoki wood. Outside are two large landscaped pools. The water is simple thermal and is used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, aching limbs, and the general relief of stress and nervousness. The food at Tamanoyu is traditional Japanese featuring a lot of fresh seafood. Dinner and Breakfast are included in the price of the inn. Onsen: segregated men's and women's indoor and outdoor hot spring public baths.
