May 4, 2007. Toronto, Canada. Finally, I set off to Athens for a 23 day trip, alone. Quite often, I had friends asking me the similar questions, "Backpacking? Greece? Turkey? Why?" And quite often, I felt hesitant to answer. "The freedom ... May be ... oh, the Aegean Sea, the blue sky, the beaches, and ... the ruins!" Steve (my bf at the time), Alice (Steve's sister) and I (Michelle) took a fabulous 25 day trip to Greece ! We planned the trip so that we would split our time between an islands vacation and time to spend with Steve and Alice’s family who live in Greece . Our flight landed in Athens and we spent 2 days there, took a ferry to Ios for 4 days and took another ferry to Santorini for 4 days. We then flew from Santorini to Salonika in the north of Greece and rented a car to drive to the village of Mikrokastro , where Steve and Alice’s maternal relatives live. We arrived in the airport after a long, but smooth flight. I felt tired and full from a meal of nothing but disgusting carbs. Bad pasta, bad bread, bad crackers, etc. It took forever to get our passports stamped and then to get our bags. The pre arranged taxi from George's company was waiting for us. He took our bags from us and loaded them in the trunk. He then handed us ice cold water bottles. While he drove he answered all the questions we had for him about Greece. He spoke wonderful English.
