If we were to travel to San Jose CR again, we would definitely choose to stay at the Hotel Grano de Oro. We tried several hotels in San Jose and Grano de Oro was by far the best quality for a reasonable price. The price is about the equivalent of staying at a Holiday Inn in the USA but the quality is more like a higher-end Hilton or Marriott. We spent our second day touring the city and stopped at a number of museums. We arrived in San Jose as scheduled and met up with our friend. Our taxi took us to Kap's Place, sort of like a hostel but with a more homey feel to it. After settling in we had dinner at Soda Isabel (recommended in the Lonely Planet guide). In the morning we walked to Museo Nacional and learnt about the history of Costa Rica.
