I was there in May, 2008 with a package tour. We were originally booked into the New Cataract Hotel but it and the Old Cataract had both been closed for renovations just before we arrived. It was a real let down since I have been in both hotels several times. The Basma had some problems: slow drains, low water pressures, very slow toilets & very thin towels which could barely get you dry. Nothing felt even partly"clean" there. I have been in Egypt several times and I understand desert dirt and the problems it causes, but there is dust and there is Dirt.It was a pretty hotel, but not memorable. I don't remember the food or restaurants. It is on a hill just up from the Nubian museum, which was handy, but since Aswan was already at 120+ degrees, no one was walking much that week. Maybe for a first-timer the experience was not so bad, but for an experienced Egypt traveler, it rated about 2 1/2 stars at most. The view from that part of the Nile is the best in Aswan, no matter what hotel you are in, so Location makes up for a few of the Basma's sins and, you are not in the middle of Awsan with lots of other hotels, noisy traffic, etc. At the same time, if you want to walk around Aswan on your own, you will want to take a taxi or horse cart from this location. So, if they have fixed the plumbing in the last 2 years, and bought some new towels, I would stay there again just for the view and peaceful atmosphere.
