Great Hotel
By New Orleans Bob, 2/6/07
This is a great hotel. Everything was 5** except... The front desk staff was very non careing, we were transfered from the Gran Caribe Real in Cancun, and were promised ocean front rooms... Did'nt happen and the front desk could care less... The beds were Rock Hard... The food was more like 3** Other wise it was a great place to stay. Great Drinks. Dont talk to the Real Club people, Timeshare, Not a good deal.

Front Desk is terrible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/14/08
As stated by another reviewer the front desk staff at this resort is awful, they are condescending, patronizing and rude. I also tried to check-in online several times before I arrived and each time the website did not work. I called the hotel multiple times and was routed to their "help-desk", needless to say they never fixed the problem. So I arrived without being able to check in advance and that's when the problems began. We waited over four and a half hours for our room to be ready after being told multiple times it would be ready in twenty minutes. At no time did any member of the staff try to do anything to make the problem go away, the just kept telling us how sorry they were, yet never made any attempts to get the room ready. We sat in the lobby and watched a hundred people check in to their rooms and they never once cared to help us out. You are strictly a number to them and they sure treated us like one. That experience really put a bad taste in my mouth as I was extremely annoyed at how I was treated. There are much nicer places to stay in Playa for a whole lot less money. I would not stay there again if I was paid too.

Lovely resort, highly recommend
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/16/11
The resort is very clean, great service and food. Room was top of the line. Entertainment was good but wish there had been more dance pariticipation from the tourists. The beach was good and the staff very polite and nice.

Very nice resort! Uneven service
By Kyleh, 2/19/08
My wife and I just spent 2 weeks in the Presidential suite for our 10th anniversary. It was one of the most beautiful rooms we have ever stayed in! The resort was just beautiful, there were maintenance people replacing tiles, painting, etc every day to keep the place looking brand new, and the maintenance really shows, there was none of the usual resort rundown hallways or broken worn out furniture, everything was top notch! If there is anything to complain about, it was that the service was uneven. Apparently only about half of the employees know that this is supposed to be a 5* resort. Most of them were completely professional at all times, but there were occasional issues with rudeness or incompetancy. The Presidential suite was beautiful, but it is anything but private! The description on the website says that it's a rooftop penthouse suite, which we were really looking forward to. Unfortunately the roof that it's on is the main building, which is 2 story. On both sides there are 3 story buildings flanking the main lobby building, so the balconies of other suites are literally as close as 10 feet away from your 'private pool and verandah'. Same with the hot tub in the Presidential, it's walled in glass to give you a nice view of the courtyard and ocean, but unfortunately that means that you are on display for any room that's higher than you are, which is a lot. There are blinds you can close, but that negates the view. Food was great, we mostly ate at the buffet but the Chef's Plate top restaurant was a nice experience, and the variety of food was good enough that we didn't get tired of it in two weeks. The previous review is absolutely right that the beds are rock hard, they feel like stone tables with a few inches of cotton on top of them, not very relaxing after a long day of touring.

Hotel Management Spoiled a Great Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/29/08
The title pretty much says it all, but here are some more details on our experience: Front Desk - This was definitely the low-light of the trip! Two days before we left, we did on-line check-in for our room category which as a pool-side swim-up room. But, when we checked in we were told the room we had reserved would not be available until the next morning. Since it was only supposed to be one night, we agreed to stay in one of the non-swim-up suites for that one night. Unfortunately this situation continued for the next three days during which time we really could not fully unpack and did not have the room type that we had signed up for - no explanations, no negotiations, take it or leave it (the hotel). Eventually on the fourth day we were able to move into the room we had reserved. Everything Else - Including location, food, mixed drinks, facilities, pools, beaches, etc was generally good to great. Rooms were clean and beds were very comfortable, food was generally very good quality, but the beer and wine selection was not very good - prices for non-house wine seemed quite high. The town's main shopping area was close and safe even at night. Conclusion: We'll definately be going back to the Mayan Riveria again, but we won't be staying at this hotel when we do.

absolutely greatttttttttttt
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/4/09
Me and my boyfriend traveled in June of 2009, and everything from the start was great the front desk person was very nice and helpful we even got to upgrade for 20dls a nite when online we wold of had to pay 50. The place is amazing the staff was suoper nice and helpful, the pool and the restaurants great. the only thing we don't recomend is going to their timeshare event that is awful. Our trip was for one week at playa del carmen but we got to stay two nights at the royal in cancun for no extra cost because as you know you can exchange nights between cancun and playa. We cant wait to go back back, we plan our next trip to be before the end of this year thats how good it was.

NEXT YEAR!!
By Andrew, 9/20/07
We've been to this resort 2 times (both times started at the sister Gran resort in Cancun, but due to overbooking there, they offered us to come here). Staying here makes us feel like we're special. The service is great, everything is clean and the pools and beaches are amazing. And the food is excellent, even the buffets. I hope we'll get to go here again next year!!!

Dream get away
By Sean G, 2/23/10
The Royal Playa Del Carmen was absolutely amazing for a honeymoon. We have already discussed going there again for our 10th anniversary (if not sooner). The place was so beautiful and immaculate. The staff were almost invisible in their work (not in the way) but if you payed attention there was always someone cleaning something. Our room was amazing, with a balcony overlooking the main pools and an ocean view. Everyday our bed was made with some special towel oragomy and rose pedal decorations...scented oils of our choice and candles lit by the jacuzzi. The bed was so great and you could choose the pillow of your choice from a pillow menu, which my wife and I thought was amazing. There were tons of activities, so that we never had to leave the resort, although we were only one block away from 5th Avenue a major shopping hub there. The staff were extremely accomidating. There were 7 restaurants on the resort, plus we had access to 3 other restaurants across the street, as part of our all inclusive package. They had a 24 hr snack bar/ game room and a quaint little coffee shop. I would definately recommend this place to any adult looking to be pampered and have fun and be caterered to in a romantic setting.
